Since bursting out of Palatine, Illinois in 2003, Born Of Osiris have been assaulting our senses with some of the heaviest music known to man. They were one of the first bands in the metalcore genre to introduce progressive elements and that ensured they were built for the long haul and whilst many of their peers have fallen by the wayside, this crew have gone from strength to strength. Album number seven finds the band in confident mode and delivering an album in Through Shadows that stands as a career best.
Born Of Osiris’ last album, Angel Or Alien was released in 2021 and by February of the following year the band had already started to work on tracks that would become those found on Through Shadows. Subsequently, this album sounds far more measured than its predecessor and gives the impression that it is built for the long haul. That becomes immediately apparent on opening tune ‘Seppuku’; Born Of Osiris don’t feel the need to arrive with all guns blazing, rather we are greeted with a haunting introduction and one that suggests there’s been a tear in the matrix. It’s a rather discombobulating way to kick things off and gives no hint of the coming storm. However, those with a penchant for the heavy stuff (which is why we’re all here, right) won’t be disappointed because when the band do arrive, it is with vitriol and force, exploding with nuclear fission.
No matter how heavy Born Of Osiris get, such as on ‘Elevate’ and the majestic title-track, there’s always that irresistible trademark groove underpinning their songs. Yet, this is a band who understand the dynamics of music very well and Through Shadows is a pertinent title for this record. Not only does it relate to the overarching theme of this album and the realisation that without walking through shadows we can’t reach the light, but the album itself is a combination of light and shade, and the lithe and the heavy. Listening to this album is not unlike stepping into a hall of mirrors with sound fractured and exploding in all directions. The progressive route the band follow gives the album a real sense of motion; it is constantly flowing and it is never knowing where the band will go next that makes this release an engaging listen and one that never fails to throw up surprises (such as the saxophone on ‘Activated’…where the hell did that come from?!).
Featuring a (lucky) thirteen tracks, Through Shadows is an album that flows extremely well and is another sure step upon Born Of Osiris’ unending quest.
