Formed in Pennsylvania in 1997, Halestorm have grown up in public to become rock royalty and if any doubts surround their status then just check out the reaction they received on the recent Iron Maiden tour and Back To The Beginning event. Three years after their Back From The Dead album, the band make a triumphant return with their sixth long player Everest. Finding the band at the peak of their powers, Halestorm are a band on fire and have unleashed a record which smoulders like hot coal and stands as a career best.
2025 marks Halestorm’s twentieth year on Atlantic Records and the faith that both parties placed in the other is really starting to pay off. In the case of Halestorm, this has given them a certain amount of musical freedom and as such Everest is a diverse album with no two tracks inhabiting the same sonic space. A band who’ve been in the game over a quarter of a century, you might be expecting Halestorm to kick down a gear, if so your delusions will be shattered by opening track ‘Fallen Star’; a thunderous drumroll and a chunky guitar riff immediately shock the listener into life and they keep us wide awake over the course of 40 fluctuating minutes. Producer David Cobb has done a great job here and has given the band a big, boomy sound and the title-track does indeed feel as if it was recorded amongst the snow covered peaks of Everest. Likewise, the following ‘Shiver’ floats upon the air like an eagle between the peaks and it’s this constant flow that makes the album such an engaging listen.
You get the feeling that tracks from this album will transfer well to the live environment (probably the Litmus Test for any rock band) with the bluesy ‘Like A Woman Can’ having that lighter/mobile-in-the-air moment and the hard rocking, staccato ‘Rain Your Blood On Me’ affording plenty of headbanging and fist banging action. ‘Watch Out!’ (a song that deserves an exclamation mark) gets up close and personal whilst ‘Broken Doll’ turns the lights down low for an atmospheric track which coils in the air as if dry ice. Rolling like credits at the end of a film, final track ‘How Will You Remember Me’ makes for a whimsical finale and brings a real sense of closure.
Everest finds Halestorm at the top of their game and it’ll be interesting to know where they go from here…but for now they should enjoy the view.
