Whilst street punk was never in danger of dying, it could be argued that by 1990 it was on life support. Propagators Agnostic Front, The Exploited and GBH had all veered into metal territory, leaving a void where there was once a visceral, politically-charged brand of punk. It was a space New York’s The Casualties set out to fill, and fill it they did, putting the boot back into punk by releasing a bunch of hard, yet anthemic, albums that dragged the genre into the new millennium. Staying true to their original remit, latest long-player Detonate is an incendiary affair that finds the band on fire, delivering a succession of songs that explode like a series of depth-charges and evidence street punk very much alive and kicking.

Having celebrated their thirty-fifth anniversary last year, you might expect a band of The Casualties vintage to be easing off the accelerator and preparing for the heritage circuit. Yet, nothing could be further from the truth; having recently inked a deal with Hellcat Records the band are re-energised and as such have little time to waste on fancy preambles. A scrambled collage of news headlines forms a brief introduction (mirroring our age of sensory overload) and segues nicely into the primal scream that is opening cut ‘Detonate’. Like a bomb on the point of explosion, ‘Detonate’ sends shards of sonics shattering in every direction and succinctly sets the tone for the rest of the record. With only one of the thirteen tracks (barely) breaking the three-minute mark, this album derives its power from a kind of musical reductionism; The Casualties don’t use two notes when one will suffice and as such tracks like ‘People Over Power’ take the most direct line to what it’s all about. Stripped to the bone and devoid of any excess fat, the songs comprising Detonate are akin to a welterweight boxer and deliver a succession of heavy blows. Unburdened by excess weight, these tunes come coupled to a lyricism that leaves little room for ambiguity, and that makes them all the more impactful.

You get the feeling that Detonate has been written with one eye on the live environment with ‘Brick By Brick’ (and, indeed, the whole album) being a pit-ready anthem and has an instant sing-along quality that’ll adhere the band to even the toughest crowd. The Casualties never lose sight of important stuff like song structure and melody, meaning that no matter how raucous things get, there’s a strong groove and swing underpinning these songs which gives the likes of ‘Eye For An Eye’ a moshable quality. Born from the same streets as Breakdown, District 9, and Madball, means that The Casualties have an effortless crossover appeal and ‘Pigs On Fire’ will attract hardcore kids, spiky tops and metalheads in equal measure.

‘Wake Up, Kill, Repeat’ finds the band racing towards a frantic conclusion, which is exactly how they arrived, ensuring Detonate will reverberate for many years, rendering The Casualties a contemporary force.
