Record label Dying Victims Productions is quickly becoming my go-to for all things heavy metal. Like Peaceville and Earache back in the 1980’s, pretty much everything they release is bang on the money, or at the very least worthy of your attention. Case in point being Night Spectre and their eponymously-titled debut album. Formed in Greece in 2024, this quintet channel the energy of old school bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest to serve up eight tracks that are powered forth by an unbridled energy. While they look to the past for inspiration, they certainly aren’t a retro act and Night Spectre suggests they have a bright future.
Gun fire and the sound of a police siren form a brief introduction that acts as a warning to the curious, before Night Spectre arrive in a hail of black rain to unleash opening track ‘Death Contract’. With a twin guitar attack dualling in a neo-classical way, the rhythm section rolling on tank tracks and Tasos Molyviatis’ reaching glass-shattering extremes, this cut encapsulates all that makes heavy metal great. In Thomas Stamatas and Dimitris Diogos, the band have a pair of guitarists who could rival the axis of Murray/Smith and Downing/Tipton, and in a similar fashion let loose all sorts of fretwork fireworks that will cause anyone listening to grab their air-guitars and imitate the frenetic finger work going on here. Tracks like ‘Cheating The Fates’ have the same kind of gallop found on Enforcer records and will appeal to anybody who likes their metal with plenty of balls and firepower.
While Night Spectre are kind enough wear their influences proudly on their sleeves, they are no mere copyists and what they bring to the table is an energy that’s been missing from trad metal in the past few years. In fact, Night Spectre are breathing new life into a genre that was in danger of becoming staid and you can definitely feel that rejuvenation emanating from the grooves. Even when the band take their foot off the pedal (such as on the first half of the epic ‘To Die In The Ancient Fire’) there’s no discernable dip in energy levels. In terms of tempos and time changes, Night Spectre are a band who constantly mix things up, and as such this albums has the feel of an entity in constant motion and just like the proverbial rolling stone, Night Spectre is in no danger of gathering moss.
It is with the title-track that this album comes to a raucous conclusion, and it’s a song that’s sure to become something of a theme tune for the band. And just like the album of which its title alludes, makes the perfect calling card.
