Since bursting out of the sun-kissed climes of Fort Worth, Texas, Frozen Soul have positioned them at the front of death metal’s renaissance. Drawing influence from the likes of Bolt Thrower and Paradise Lost, this quintet have a warlike sound that leaps straight for the throat and takes no prisoners. With their first two albums creating shock waves throughout the metal community, long player number three comes with an air of expectation, a make a break affair that could propel the band towards the biggest stages or send them back to the basement clubs. No Place Of Warmth suggests it is going to be the former and delivers eleven cuts that are sure to turn up the heat and fire Frozen Soul right to the top.

Being of a certain age, I remember when death metal was a seriously underground movement; albums were released on defiantly independent labels like Earache and Peaceville, and those records were past under desks like illegal swag. The idea of a death metal band being signed to Century Media (a division of Sony Music) would have been ludicrous and would have been viewed with suspicion. Yet, along with bands such as Undeath, Frozen Soul are taking the genre towards the mainstream, and all without sacrificing its core heaviness, and as many of the legacy bands start shuffling off towards the cemetery, Frozen Soul are proving themselves defenders of the faith. That the band are so well equipped becomes immediately obvious with the opening (and title) track ‘No Place Of Warmth’. Featuring a guest spot from Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), it perfectly illustrates how respected Frozen Soul have become and the quality of collaborations they attract (Machine Head and Sanguisugabogg also make appearances on this album) and this first cut finds Frozen Soul on the ball right from the very first note. With a spooky, insidious introduction, replete with ominous tolling bell, the band certainly know how to make an introduction and when they kick in at the minute mark, it is with some force. That Bolt Thrower influence is very much evident as the band roll from speaker to speaker like an invading army: the rhythm section fires like canons, the guitars light up the sky like phosphorous flares, whilst vocalist Chad Green barks his words as if a general who has returned from the grave. It all adds up to a ferocious affair and ensures that No Place Of Warmth is built for only the hardiest of metalheads.

The brand of death metal which Frozen Soul play might suggest that they’re limited within their parameters, and while it’s certainly true that they know their boundaries, they are constantly pushing at those limits, mixing things up in terms of rhythms and tempos to ensure that things never become staid. It means that No Place Of Warmth has a perpetual motion with ‘Chaos Will Reign’ and ‘Eyes Of Despair’ elbowing each other out the way in fight to tumble from your speakers. It means that in terms of Frozen Soul’s career progression, No Place Of Warmth heats things up nicely.
