There are bands who appear in a blaze of glory and then burn themselves out as quickly as they arrived, then there are bands who grow into their career and age like a fine wine. Florida’s Shinedown most definitely fall into the second category and their career trajectory has formed a continuous upwards curve. Testament to their staying power is latest studio album Ei8ht (unsurprisingly their eighth), a whopping collection of eighteen tracks that finds the band crackling with creativity and operating with an unbridled confidence. Ei8ht isn’t the sound of a band in their comfort zone, rather it evidences a group forging forwards, and in a case of fortune favouring the brave, Shinedown have produced a winner.
Formed in Jacksonville in 2001, it’s safe to say that Shinedown have learnt a thing or two over the past quarter of a century and that means they don’t feel the need to arrive with drums firing and guitars blazing, quite the opposite. A haunting piano motif creates an unusual frame in which to place this album, but the very fact that it’s unexpected is exactly why Shinedown chose this option and means this low key opening grabs the attention more than any bombastic blast could. It also means that when the ‘At The Bottom’ kicks in at the minute mark, it kicks in with full throttle, evolving into a song that swings with wrecking ball force. It’s sure to make an equally vivacious concert opener (surely the Litmus Test for any rock song) and sets the tone for the coming sixty-five minutes.
The secret to Shinedown’s longevity has undoubtedly been their ability to refine things as they’ve progressed. A criticism often thrown at their early albums was that they were one-dimensional, it’s obviously something Shinedown have taken on board because Ei8ht is an album that’s in constant rotation. With no two songs inhabiting the same sonic space, this is a record that never becomes staid with slower tracks such as ‘Dizzy’ nestling next to raging rockers like ‘Young Again’. Yet even within songs there are wheels within wheels, and that makes Ei8ht the kind of album that can be consumed in one sitting, despite the lengthy running time. This is unashamedly a rock album and contains all the essential ingredients from soaring guitars to sing along vocals, yet it also has an effortless crossover appeal, so don’t be surprised when you hear these songs in all the unexpected places.
With its interlocking curves, the numeral 8 is used to represent eternity in many cultures, and one thing’s for sure, Shinedown’s Ei8ht is going to be around for a while.
