I’m sure that the five beings comprising Every Hell would baulk at the term “supergroup”, but as they comprise members of Black Peaks, Memory Of Elements, and Skin Failure, no other word will suffice. As we know, musicians are a funny breed and band chemistry is a fine art, putting several “names” together is no sure sign of success, things can either sparkle and crackle, or fall flat and fizzle out. I’m pleased to report that Every Hell land very much in the first category and since their 2024 debut EP, Vertebrate, have been making the world a heavier (and better) place with their riff heavy sonic assault. Taking all that was great about their debut and ramping it up to the nth degree, The People’s Republic Of Hell is a five track affair that finds Every Hell serving up a slice of heaven. 

Starting as they mean to go on, opening track ‘Let Me Go’ is a smash-and-grab of a song that finds the band arriving with all fists flying. There’s no elongated introduction or fancy preamble to ease us into this EP, rather Every Hell deliver a hammer-smashing-skull blow that’s all the more powerful for its sudden arrival. From here on the band wheel out the heavier artillery, delivering a riff-centric attack that fills every inch of cubic space, the bowel-loosening bass rumble and pounding drums stupefy the listener with their sheer brute force. However, don’t mistake Every Hell’s approach for lack of invention because nothing could be further from the truth. There’s plenty of variety on offer in terms of song structure, the band don’t stay in one place for long, like cogs within cogs, Every Hell are a band in constant rotation, the sound churned as if meat through a grinder, and that makes for a sound which constantly repositions the listener. As such, this isn’t music you passively receive, rather it instigates a response and it’s understandable as to why the pits at their shows turn into wild, seething masses. Much of their musical flexibility comes from vocalist Will Gardner who flits between unearthly growls and falsetto shrieks, and when coupled to the shapeshifting sound makes for an arresting experience that will stop even the most hardy metalhead in their tracks. Then, just when you think you have heard everything the band has to offer, they’ll throw some saxophone into the mix (where the hell did that come from?) to challenge any preconceived ideas you might have.

By taking all that was great about Vertebrate and orientating it towards the future, Every Hell have produced a sophomore EP that marks them as a potent force in the heavy music scene. You have been warned.
