Boundaries are a band who attack life with a take-no-prisoners kind of ethos. Since their formation in Connecticut in 2013, they’ve released albums and EP’s with clockwork regularity, and not even a little thing like a global pandemic could halt their forwards momentum. It’s a restless kind of energy with which they operate and it can’t help but inform their sound. As such, their fourth long player, Yearning: The Beautiful After, is an uncompromising affair that finds the band pushing their sound into new realms, delivering a brutal, but nuanced, set of songs that will set the standard for all who follow.

Boundaries aren’t the kind of band to waste time and procrastinate; there’s always a sense of urgency to everything they do, a feeling that time is of the essence, and that means opening track ‘Malconscience’ appears like a bullet between your eyebrows. It’s the kind of song you don’t feel until it connects, and that makes it all the more impactful. This is a white hot brand of metalcore and ‘Malconscience’ is akin to standing next to a furnace door as waves of molten sonics seer your flesh. It finds the band bang on point from the very first note, serving up riffs that dig in deep into your soul, along with a rhythm section that delivers a series of stupefying blows. The resulting sound isn’t for the faint of heart or weak of constitution, and Yearning: The Beautiful After demands a certain stamina from the listener; this isn’t music you play as background music, rather it demands your undivided attention and the band will hold you captive over the course of fourteen furious tracks.

With a lyricism that touches upon some of the biggest, most existential questions life has to offer, Boundaries fuse crushing sounds to equally weighty words, meaning songs such as ‘Skies cast amber black’ push down upon the listener with gravitational force. However, the band aren’t all blunt trauma, and there are plenty of lither moments to provide contrast. Case in point being ‘Torn wide open’, a collaboration with Make Them Suffer, it features plenty of beatdowns, chugging riffs, along with vocals that emanate from the bowels of hell, yet it has a neat sting in the tail, an almost ambient section that is the complete opposite of what just came before. Even at their heaviest moments, Boundaries offer up a sound that’s been filtered through a kaleidoscope and as such ‘Bitter ash, bitter love’ fractures sound in all directions like glass shattering and sending glittering shards in all directions.

Featuring fourteen tracks, Yearning: The Beautiful After is a tad longer that most albums, but even so, there’s not one excess note on here nor superfluous meanderings, Boundaries retain a strong focus throughout and that only adds to the danger radiating from the grooves and this album finds Boundaries smashing through every musical constraint.
