Nestor – Live At Gothenburg Film Studios

The live environment is where rock bands forge their reputations. With one shot at glory and no room for error, the stage is a place that separates the wheat from the chaff and the kings from the pretenders. Thankfully, it’s where Swedish quintet Nestor feel most at home and has been their natural habitat since they formed way back in 1989, while a triumphant reformation in 2021 solidified their reputation as Europe’s premier AOR band. Years of treading the boards has rendered them a tight unit who know (more than) a thing or two about pleasing a crowd and they’ve carved a legacy in stone through relentless touring. Testament to their power is latest offering Live At Gothenburg Film Studios, an album overflowing with classic tunes, and one that will continue the band’s meteoric rise.

A good live album should recreate the magic of a show and give the listener a taste of what a band sound like on stage (think Kiss’ Alive and Maiden’s Live After Death), and that’s precisely what Live At Gothenburg Film Studios does. This album flows like an actual set with ‘Intro’ recreating that excitement a crowd feels when the clock ticks down towards showtime, and the aptly-titled ‘We Come Alive’ exploding with effervescence and releasing all that tension when the band hit the stage. It’s an opener that perfectly encapsulates Nestor’s sound; it’s hard and melodic and has an anthemic quality that’s built for the biggest stages. In short, it’s tailor made for the live environment and certainly gets the crowd fired up. Just listening to tracks such as ‘Stone Cold Eyes’ and ‘Perfect 10’ fills your head with visions of smiling crowds, horns-held-high and guitarists with their feet on the monitors, and therein lies the magic of a good live album. Live At Gothenburg Film Studios places the listener in the heart of the action; if you’ve never seen the band before, or if you have and you’d like to relive the experience, this album bottles some of that Nestor live magic.

Ever since Nestor returned from hiatus in 2021, there has been a feeling that they are making up for lost time. During their original incarnation (1989-1995) they only released a handful of EP’s, but now they have two full lengths under their belts and it is from them that the set list is primarily comprised. This is like a “greatest hits” album, only with the added oomph of being performed live with power ballads such as ‘Last To Know’ sitting next to stompers like ‘Unchain My Heart’ quite effortlessly. However, no matter in what guise the band appear they never lose sight of melody and song structure, rendering each of these tracks certified earworms.

Featuring sixteen tracks and clocking in at seventy minutes, this album (almost) mirrors that of an actual Nestor concert. Aided by a full production, it sounds like one, too, making this an authentic live document, and authenticity is something Live At Gothenburg Film Studios has in abundance.
