Formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2019, Left To Suffer aren’t a band who deal in niceties. They’re the musical equivalent of a rabid Rottweiler; brutal, bloodthirsty and about to leap for your neck. Definitely not made for the faint of heart, but those who like their deathcore with plenty of bite will find a spiritual home within the confines of their fourth long player, Unwelcome Guest. Describing their sound as nu-deathcore (an amalgamation of nu-metal and deathcore), they serve up eleven bombastic cuts that position them very much as leaders and not followers.
The riff which heralds the arrival to opening song (the aptly-titled) ‘Track One’ should tell you all you need to know about this album. It’s crushing and weighs down upon the listener with unfathomable force; I don’t think the means have been invented to gauge its full weight, but believe me when I tell you it is akin to the world on Atlas’ shoulders. However, it is when the drums and guitar kick in that the album really gets in the groove, all the instruments swinging from speaker to speaker like a huge wrecking ball. The vocals are suitably caustic, the result being a sound that will repel all but the most hardy listeners. Swarming like a bunch of angry wasps, the following ‘Therapy’ is the musical equivalent to a dismembered head dissolving in a bath of acid; you don’t want to get too close, doing so might cause serious harm, but the magnetic pull of cuts such as ‘Gun In The Duffel Bag’ is too much to resist.
The great thing about Left To Suffer is that they give their fans exactly what they want. There’s no danger of the band exploring their softer side and trying to slip a ballad under the net, Unwelcome Guest delivering pugnacious punch after potent punch. When a band operates at the extremities of any genre, there’s always a danger that things can become generic, not so with Left To Suffer, the sound they’ve formulated has given them a huge amount of freedom. The aforementioned ‘Gun In The Duffel Bag’ is pure Cannibal Corpse death metal, the following ‘STFU’ barks vocals in tough guy hardcore style, whilst the pick scrapes that occur periodically mimics the scratching found on hip hop records. But it is deathcore that’s the band’s main vocation, and they never let you forget it, the sound found on ‘Honor Amongst Thieves’ being a microphone dipped into the lower reaches of hell.
This album is the complete antithesis of easy listening and the weak of constitution should hang up their gloves, but those who like their music with plenty of blood under the nails will find a welcome home in Unwelcome Guest.
