Tom Morello – Everyone Gets Everything They Want

Having changed the face of heavy music as part of Rage Against The Machine, Tom Morello could be forgiven for sitting back and basking in past glories. However, as anyone familiar with his work will testify, Tom is powered by a restless and pioneering spirit and has spent his career charting new musical territory. When you factor in a revolutionary core, a sense of righteous indignation, you have an incendiary combination and in his latest album, Everyone Gets Everything They Want you’ll find the spark that will light a million flames.

If there were any worries that time has blunted Tom Morello’s vitality and veracity then they are rudely broken by opening track ‘Beth From Electronics’. Revolving around a riff that’s the stuff of Tony Iommi’s dreams/nightmares, it’s 43-seconds of hammer-smashing-skull, a substantial instrumental of such force that the means of weighing it have yet to be invented. It succinctly sets out the album’s stall and it will reverberate throughout Everyone Gets Everything They Want like a series of depth charges. However, Tom Morello is a finely nuanced artist and one who is not easy to pigeonhole; like cogs turning cogs and wheels within wheels, this is an album in constant motion, it never stays in one place for long and flits from genre to genre with apparent ease. Take ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love’, for example; it’s akin to a heavyweight boxer primed for a title fight, powerful and fleet of foot it swings with wrecking ball force. It is punctuated by angelic, choral vocals that seem to emanate from the heavens, the song presenting two polar opposites that work in tandem, each acting as a foil to highlight and enhance the other. It might seem a big leap from here to the following ‘I Am Not Yours To Commend’, a sparse, folky track that’s performed against a backdrop of stark keys, yet it’s a leap made seamlessly, and it’s an inherent fluidity that’s allows Tom Morello to place the heavy next to the lithe, and with no discernible drop in power. That this album flows so well is undoubtedly due to his fretwork gymnastics; time has only honed his skills, and with minimal gear and effects, pulls some previously unheard sounds from his six strings and it is this virtuosity, a shapeshifting quality, that is the invisible thread that stitches these twelve tunes together.

Featuring a host of collaborations and bouncing around different genres like a pinball between the bumpers, Everyone Gets Everything They Want is a multifaceted, multicoloured album that requires several spins to fully grasp its sweeping scope, but when the songs are as good as the dozen here, repeat plays are a pleasure.
