There was a time, no so long ago, when “deathcore” was viewed as a dirty word in metal circles and bands would go to great (often violent) lengths to distance themselves from the genre. But then something happened around the turn of the decade; bands such as Spite appeared and took inspiration from the scene’s blood-soaked beginnings and added a modern slant. CRUCIFICTION are one such band who are taking deathcore’s brutal past and running with it headlong into the future.
Formed recently by Bloodbather’s Salem Vex, CRUCIFICTION have already been creating waves, with their latest single ‘VHS’ (featuring Spite’s Darius Tehrani) garnering some favourable attention. Therefore, their debut album Will To Power has a lot to live up to but, with 10 razor sharp songs, it makes a strong case for being one of 2024’s best albums. A brief horror movie sample creates an eerie tone before the album bursts into life with the raging title-track. With the band scrawling their sound on every surface, things get pretty hectic, pretty quick. Like sharks in a feeding frenzy (as the water bubbles red around them), CRUCIFICTION go straight for the kill and operate with a take-no-prisoners ethos. But this isn’t just mindless violence; the band are a tightly wound ball of aggression and the album’s overarching (albeit bloodthirsty) storyline gives the album a cerebral edge and clear line of travel.
You’d think that the sunny climes of South Florida would be the last place you’d find a fertile deathcore scene, but with bands such Dakou, Bodysnatcher and Tracheotomy doing the rounds it feels like a huge scene is swelling and CRUCIFICTION could just be the area’s breakout band. Rocking a distinctly Suicide Silence/Carnifex vibe, songs such as ‘Endless Torture’ and ‘Amputated Satisfaction’ place CRUCIFICTION at the heavier end of the scale. It’s a violent sound that has crossover appeal and will attract fans from both sections of deathcore’s origins.
In Will To Power, CRUCIFICTION have produced an album that’s visionary in the same way as Deicide and Iowa was, and hopefully it’ll do the same kind of business.
