After blazing a trail across the UK, The Plot In You leave a parting gift in the shape of their latest EP. The third in a series of extended plays (unsurprisingly titled Vol. 3), finds the band showcasing their more mature sound. From their early incarnation as metalcore bruisers, the band have gradually introduced more post-hardcore styling which has allowed The Plot In You to add texture and richness to their sound. But the great thing about this crew is that they haven’t ripped up their roots and Vol. 3 sits somewhere in between the two genres, a post-metalcore sound, if you wish.
Some might question the band’s reasoning in releasing three, three-track extended plays inside a calendar year, the nine tracks compiled would have made a fine album (arguably a career best) in their own right. Yet, the EP and single is more in tune with how people consume music nowadays, plus there’s a freshness and immediacy to these songs that would get lost in the usual album-tour-album cycle. Thirdly, and probably most importantly, The Plot In You have such a thick and lustrous sound that three songs in eleven minutes is the best way to experience and these cuts are bursting with more ideas than some bands pack into an entire career.
It’s with the pure melodic sensibility of ‘Been Here Before’ that the band kick things off and it’s a pit ready anthem that should cause havoc wherever it is unleashed. Without sacrificing their core sound (or integrity), this cut has real crossover appeal and could see some chart action and it’s no surprise it was chosen as the lead single. Adopting a darker aesthetic, ‘Pretend’ follows and feels like a continuation of ‘Been Here Before’, only harder, faster and with more grit under the fingernails. Long term fans won’t be disappointed with this buster and it’s strong enough to attract many new admirers. Following a clear line of travel, this EP gets harder as it progresses and ‘Spare Me’ revisits the band’s roots to deliver a punch number that swings like a heavyweight boxer.
I wonder if we’ll be treated to another instalment in this series of EP’s? On the strength of this release it could rival another little record titled Vol. 4…
