Signs Of The Swarm – To Rid Myself Of The Truth

Formed in 2014 and hailing from the Steel City of Pittsburgh, the career of Signs Of The Swarm has been pretty full-on and relentless (just like their sound, in fact). It’s found them releasing countless singles, a tantalising trail of breadcrumbs that leads to their sixth album, To Rid Myself Of Truth. Their second full-length for Century Media Records, this record finds them further refining their sound until all that is left is the ultimate distillation of deathcore. Attacking like a school of sharks, this is a bloodthirsty affair that soon turns the water red and drags the listener down towards delirious depths, all the while offering little in the way of redemption (which is exactly how a deathcore album should operate).

You might expect a band such as Signs Of The Swarm, in their eleventh year and releasing their sixth album, to be showing signs of slowing down, but not a bit of it. Opening shot ‘To Rid Myself Of The Truth’ arrives like a surprise hook from a heavyweight boxer and it knocks the listener clean off their feet. It’s all the more powerful for its sudden arrival and it immediately marks the band as a contemporary force; this isn’t a band merely treading water, rather they’re bringing a sense of urgency to the table and injecting the genre with fresh blood cells. With a riff slamming like a huge door in the centre of Dante’s Inferno, the title-track serves as a warning for the curious; it’s certainly not made for the faint-hearted and as such it should really come with some kind of health warning, yet more hardy souls who like their music with plenty of bite will find a spiritual home here.

A band always on a quest of self-refinement, To Rid Myself Of Truth finds Signs Of The Swarm streamlining their sound. What becomes immediately obvious is that there are less parts on this album and as such it sound absolutely massive, it’s an approach that turns songs such as ‘Natural Selection’ into huge, hulking monoliths that tower overhead and render the album impervious to light. However, long term fans won’t be disappointed; the album is still full of those trademark shifts with cuts like ‘Scars Upon Scars’ fracturing sound in every direction. With a little help from their musician friends (Will Ramos, Phil Bozeman, Jack Murray, Johnny Crowder), Signs Of The Swarm have released an album that places them at the forefront of the burgeoning deathcore revival.

To Rid Myself Of The Truth is a confessional affair that finds the band touching upon some dark subject matter, but with this album out in the world, that darkness has never sounded so good.
