We’re no stranger to the artist known as Storm having spoke to him at Download festival (during an actual storm) and it feels as if his album has been an aeon in the making. They say that good things come to those who wait, and that’s proved true by the record he’s delivered. Serving up ten diverse tracks that incorporate everything from EDM to metalcore via rap, and ballads to all out rockers by way of pop-punk perfection Join The Storm is an album that’s going to send this young prodigy shooting towards the stratosphere.
Although barriers that separate musical genres are toppling at an alarming rate, it is no easy task to mix diverse styles and present them as something cohesive. Fuse those genres correctly and you’ll have a sound that sparkles and fizzes, but get that mixture wrong and things will implode and you’ll be left with a sticky mess on your hands. However, I’m pleased to report that Strom has proved himself a master alchemist and the sound contained within Join The Storm is akin to Guy Fawkes Night. This album is full of crashes and bangs as genres fuse and bounce off each other as if particles in a nuclear reactor, yet it’s also a smooth listen that flows like a river, and that’s best exemplified by the opening couplet; the otherworldly introduction (‘Join The Storm’) and the admixture of metal and dance that makes ‘Moonlight’ an irresistible beast and one that’ll have all but the infirm and frail shaking their tush.
The nature of Join The Storm means it has a definite crossover appeal, so next time you attend a Storm gig don’t be surprised to see teenyboppers and ageing metalheads rubbing shoulders. The former will like the pop sensibility found in ‘Alien Perspective’ whilst the latter will get the follicles flying on the following ‘Walking Dead’ (which contains some rather tasty, Eddie Van Halen-type soloing). But even within individual songs there’s a constant flux, an ebb and flow and push and pull as some sounds fuse, whilst others repel. Yet, its genius lies in taking all these disparate styles and fusing them into a unified hole, but it is quite not knowing in which guise Storm will appear next that makes the album such an engaging listen.
