Anglo-French musician Laura Cox is a trailblazer, and in more ways than one. Not only was she one of the first artists to harness the power of YouTube, building a large audience through a series of electrifying rock covers, she’s also put a modern slant on classic rock, breathing life into a genre that was in danger of becoming staid. Indicative of this is her third album (and fourth overall), Trouble Coming, a collection of eleven tracks that pay homage to rock’s illustrious past whilst simultaneously signposting a bright future and is a record that should propel Laura to unprecedented heights.
Fusing musical genres is no easy task, get that mixture wrong and an artist can find themselves in a kind of no man’s land and with no appreciable audience to play to. Get that fusion right, however, and things will sparkle and fizz like chemicals in a test tube. I’m pleased to report that Trouble Coming falls in the latter category, and if proof were needed, look no further that opening track ‘No Need To Try Harder’. Powered by a beat that moves with locomotive force, Laura Cox unleashes some nifty Southern rock slide guitar alongside some impressive licks, using all her musical knowledge to hold back the chorus until the optimum moment, ensuring that when it hits, it hits hard. The result is a song that encapsulates all that’s good about hard rock, it’s life-affirming and as such will transfer well to the live environment and you can visualise the hands held high in affirmation and thousands of voices singing along. It packs a lot into 180 seconds, yet it never feels cluttered and spikes the listener’s interest for the rest of the album.
A diamond which reflects its light in all directions, Trouble Coming is a multifaceted affair; ‘A Way Home’ is a heavy number with a boisterous beat that’ll sate hard rocks whilst the title track is a fine slice of modern country (kind of like Lynyrd Skynyrd for the TikTok generation) that would make the perfect accompaniment for a road trip through desert plains beneath a bruised coloured sky. In fact, this is an album that’s always shifting through the gears, a rolling stone that gathers no moss, and therefore it never becomes staid and has no trouble holding the listener’s attention. The aptly-titled ‘Into The Storm’ is a raging tempest, a maelstrom which finds Laura unleashing all sorts of guitar magic, whilst closer ‘Strangers Someday’ is pure musical voodoo that seemingly emanates from America’s Deep South. It’s an approach that could render Trouble Coming an eclectic stew, yet the album is stitched together by Laura’s unique style, meaning that this is the type of album you can listen to in one sitting , and without your attention sagging.
