If any band were aptly-titled, then it is surely Germany’s Flying Circus. Delivering a brand of progressive rock that’s at once heavy and lithe, they perform all sorts of musical aerobatics with a pliable sound that can shapeshift at a moments notice. It’s an approach which gives this quintet a lot of freedom and they pull a few tricks out the bag on their latest opus The Eternal Moment. A loose concept album which examines those fleeting instants that seem to last an eternity, this album should elevate the Flying Circus from the German underground and place them front and centre on the global stage.

Some music immediately grabs you by the collar and gives a good shake, and that’s certainly the case with opening track ‘A Talk With The Dead’. Introduced by a riff which is the stuff of Tony Iommi’s dreams, this is an opener that makes for a bold arrival. However, the band aren’t the kind of unit to stand still and set about scrambling the listener’s brains with a sound that shatters in several directions. A song of many suites, it finds Flying Circus operating with a kind of jazz sensibility insofar as they are fleet of foot and handle all the time changes and sonic shifts with apparent ease. It evidences a real chemistry and the band lock in to create a sound that is far bigger than their constituent parts; the guitar tone is razor sharp and cuts the air like a steely blade; the keys are gothic and glacial, giving an air of grandiosity; the rhythm section is the engine room, driving the band to unexpected realms, whilst the vocals are equally dynamic and operate within a wide range that recalls Uriah Heep’s David Byron.

With no two songs inhabiting the same sonic space there’s a danger that The Eternal Moment could become too eclectic, yet this is an album that hangs together as a cohesive whole, primarily because of the concept that threads the songs together. While it is perfectly feasible to dip in and out of this album and enjoy the songs individually, it’s best consumed whole to fully appreciate its ebb and flow as it twists and turns towards its destination. There are motifs that will echo throughout the record and as such this is an album that will reward repeat plays as subtle nuances buried in the mix bubble to the surface on successive spins.

Musically, Flying Circus paint their sound from a wide palette, employing the full range of the spectrum to create evocative soundscapes, with the words and music combining to make cuts such as ‘And You Run’ three-dimensional, living and breathing entities. Flying Circus are kind enough to wear their influences on their collective sleeve and The Eternal Moment recalls the golden age of prog rock with fans such as Rush, Gentle Giant and Genesis finding a spiritual home here, yet it’s also strong enough to attract metalheads, especially those with a penchant for the likes of Deep Purple and Dream Theater. However, the band are no mere copyists and while Flying Circus pay homage to their heroes, their inspirations are precisely that; a springboard to something new and songs such as ‘Pilikua Akahai’ and closer ‘The Time Machine’ are refreshingly original.

‘The Dancing Stone’ is added as a bonus track on certain editions, making this one of the year’s essential releases, ensuring The Eternal Moment will live long in the memory.
