Red Giant are a force of nature, and one whose winds never stop swirling. They are a hard band to pin down, but we managed to and here’s what they had to say:

Can you tell us about the band’s origins. Where did you meet etc.

Red Giant formed out of the ashes of a previous project called the Dave Simpson Trio. We were a more straight forward Blues/Rock band at that point. When we decided to move forward with a new album we felt that the DST name didn’t connect with the new songs we were writing and the new sound we had so we decided to rename and rebrand ourselves. A risky decision, but one that seems to have paid off. On the drums we have Mr John Joe Gaskin. An absolute power house of a drummer who is the strong beating heart of the band. On Guitar & Vocals we have Dave Simpson who is the main songwriter and is always pushing the band forward. On bass duties we have 2 that change up the bands dynamic. One is Mr Johnny Simpson. A cool and very calm player that never looks strained but when combined with john Joe’s drums becomes an unstoppable machine and a great platform for Dave’s guitar and vocals. The other is Miss Keira Kenworthy. A monster bass player with great stage presence and thunderous sound.

What are the musical influences of each band member and how do you forge them into a cohesive whole?

The list of influences on us all is far too long. We’d be here all day, but we forge them into the sound of Red Giant relatively easily. We are all out for the good of the band and the songs. This allows us to see what works and what doesn’t.

Can you tell us about your local music scene. Is it supportive? Are there many places to play?

Sadly like most places in the UK right now the music scene is not great. Its suffering a lot due to so many reasons.

There are so many great local bands, but with venues closing left right and center the options for gigging are slowly decreasing. This creates a dog-eat-dog attitude where no one really helps each other along as we are all in survival mode.

What’s the best and worst thing about your local scene?

The best thing is the quality of the music that’s being made. So many really great songs are out there right now.

The worst thing is the lack of venues and the lack of people being able to afford to come out to gigs. It’s one of those sad times in history where everyone loses.

Can you tell us about the band’s discography (demos, singles, albums).

So far Red Giant has released a self titled debut album of 10 songs, An EP and a stand alone single release. We are currently working on our second album.

How do you feel you’ve evolved musically throughout your career?

My goal was always to be the best musician I can be and to be able to write the best music i can write. This is the goal for all members of Red Giant. I feel that in recent years I have really evolved and am starting to find my own voice. Red Giant is that voice.

Can you tell us about tours you’ve completed. Any war stories you’d like to share?

We did an 18 date UK tour in 2025 supporting an amazing artist called Troy Redfern. That was a great time and one we will always look back on with great memories. It’s one of those moments you want to relive again and again.

As for war stories. We have so many. A few we can’t repeat, and a few we don’t want to for (legal?)reasons.

We’ve played everywhere you can think and as a result have experienced a lot of weird and strange things.

Will we see you on the road anytime soon?

Indeed you will. We don’t gig as much anymore due to the state of the UK music scene. It’s almost better to limit how much you do, but we have a fair few gigs left this year and are looking to forward to the next.

What’s next for the band? How do you plan to reach the next level?

The next level for band like us cannot be reached as its behind a paywall. Unless one of us become a millionaire over night we can’t really get any higher sadly.

The music industry has changed so much over the last 10 years and as a result requires you to do all the heavy lifting now. That includes funding everything. So, if you don’t have the money to fly you can only crawl.

Finally, what’s the one question (and answer) interviewers never ask but you wish they would?

To be fair I can’t think of any. That’s definitely a good thing.
