As if keeping 10cc on the road doesn’t keep him busy enough, Graham Gouldman also finds the time to tour with his Heart Full of Songs show, that finds the singer-songwriter in a more stripped back environment. Accompanied by a semi-acoustic three-piece band, Graham took the audience on a six decade journey throughout his long and illustrious career, and included some of 10cc’s best loved classics alongside hits he penned for numerous other artists in the 60’s and 70’s, going all the way back to 1965 and ‘For Your Love’ which became a UK number one and was a huge hit across the Atlantic for the Yardbirds.
The Theatre Severn provided a wonderful backdrop for an evening of storytelling and music, as Graham often took the opportunity to explain the inspiration for some of the songs, such as a note in an empty milk bottle for ‘No Milk Today’ and a train journey from London to Manchester for ‘Look Through any Window’, which became hits for Herman’s Hermits and the Hollies respectively. Not that the whole night was entirely given over to nostalgia, as Graham also performed the delightful ‘Floating in Heaven’, a recent collaboration with Sir Brian May, that was included on his most recent studio album, I Have Words.
Moving through the 70’s, there were plenty of 10cc stories and songs such as the timeless ‘I’m Not In Love’, the toe tapping ‘Things We Do For Love’ and quirky ‘Dreadlock Holiday’, all of which received a rapturous reception. Digging deeper into his vast catalogue, ‘Sunburn’ was from the comedy film of the same name that starred Farrah Fawcett-Majors and ‘Love’s Not For Me’ from the animated movie Animalympics. Pleasingly, there were a couple of songs from Graham’s often overlooked collaboration with Andrew Gold and the band Wax, with ‘Bridge to your Heart’ offering the opportunity for another crowd-pleasing sing-a-long.
Still delighting audiences up and down the country, this was a wonderful evening in the company of one of our most beloved songwriters.
