Dead Defined was born from the creative vision of Canadian singer/songwriter Craig Ewan. Birthed in 2018, Dead Defined blends emotional lyrics with hard-hitting rock riffage and the result are songs that capture the very essence of the human condition. Just one listen to original compositions such as ‘Better Off Alone’ and it will become obvious as to why this artist has racked up millions of global streams. ,We had the honour of speaking to Craig, and this is what he had to say:

Can you tell us about the band’s origins. Where did you meet etc.

Dead Defined began in 2018 as a solo project after years of writing songs and wanting a creative outlet that was entirely my own. Rather than forming a traditional band, I built Dead Defined around my songwriting and vision, collaborating with talented musicians and producers when needed. It gave me the freedom to create music without limitations and to focus on telling honest stories through rock music.

What are the musical influences of each band member and how do you forge them into a cohesive whole?

As the primary songwriter behind Dead Defined, my influences range from Alter Bridge, Tremonti, Creed, Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, and Shinedown to classic artists like Chris Cornell. While different collaborators bring their own influences into the recording process, the common thread is creating powerful, melodic rock songs with meaningful lyrics. The goal is always to serve the song rather than chase a particular trend or genre.

Can you tell us about your local music scene. Is it supportive? Are there many places to play?

The Greater Toronto Area has a passionate music community with a lot of talented artists across every genre imaginable. There are opportunities to play live, although like many places, venues dedicated to original music can be harder to find than they once were. Overall, I’ve found the scene to be supportive, especially among independent artists who understand the challenges of building a career without major label backing.

What’s the best and worst thing about your local scene?

The best thing is the diversity of talent. You can find incredible musicians performing every night of the week. The most challenging part is standing out. With so many artists competing for attention, it can be difficult to get people to discover new music. That said, the challenge also pushes artists to be more creative and work harder.

Can you tell us about the band’s discography (demos, singles, albums).

Dead Defined has released a series of singles over the years rather than focusing on full-length albums. Recent releases include Better Off Alone, Memories, and the latest single, One Life. Each song represents a different chapter, both musically and personally. Collectively, the music has surpassed five million streams worldwide across various platforms.

How do you feel you’ve evolved musically throughout your career?

Early on, I was focused primarily on writing songs that sounded good. As I’ve grown as a songwriter, I’ve become more interested in creating songs that connect emotionally and have a purpose. My newer material is more personal, more honest, and more confident. I’ve also learned that sometimes simplicity can have a greater impact than trying to overcomplicate a song.

Can you tell us about tours you’ve completed. Any war stories you’d like to share?

Dead Defined has primarily focused on recording and building an audience through streaming, radio, and media coverage rather than extensive touring. Some of my favorite memories come from connecting with listeners around the world and seeing songs resonate in places I never expected. As an independent artist, reaching listeners internationally and accumulating millions of streams has been an incredible experience in itself.

Will we see you on the road anytime soon?

Never say never. Right now the focus is on writing and releasing the strongest music possible, but performing live is something I’d certainly be open to if the right opportunities present themselves.

What’s next for the band? How do you plan to reach the next level?

The immediate focus is continuing to release meaningful music and expanding the audience worldwide. I want to build on the momentum from recent releases, strengthen relationships with radio stations, playlists, and media outlets, and continue connecting with listeners who relate to the message behind the songs. Growth is important, but staying authentic is even more important.

Finally, what’s the one question (and answer) interviewers never ask but you wish they would?

Question: What do you hope people take away from your music when the song ends?

Answer: I hope they feel understood. Whether it’s a song about loss, resilience, mental health, or personal struggles, I want listeners to know they’re not alone. If a song helps someone get through a difficult day or starts an important conversation, then it’s accomplished exactly what it was meant to do.
