For a fine band like Alter Bridge who boasts an enormous pool of dedicated, die hard fans, the news about their upcoming release was bound to spike up speculations as to whether they can and will outdo themselves, which ones of their albums to date are best, and what’s to be expected. Coming on the back of three singles released already, the anticipation has been so palpable, it’s almost time to get the popcorn out while scrolling through fan group posts on Facebook.

And boy, isn’t what we’ve got waiting in store on 9th January worth any wait and speculation! We are in for a proper treat from the Tremonti and Kennedy camp. They once again reinforce themselves as one of the biggest and best bands on the current metal scene. The album comes out after a 3-year pause, just in time for it to be properly digested by everyone before they hit us with their What Lies Within tour in a couple of months.

The eight album by Alter Bridge titled simply by their name is a fine work of art. There are a few potential hits there. Two of them have already been airing massively (‘Silent Divide’ and ‘What Lies Within’), and another couple of power tracks are ‘Power Down’ and ‘Scales Are Falling’. ‘Playing Aces’ (the third single released to present) may well turn out to be the new ‘Bleed It Dry’, and ‘What Are You Waiting For’ seems to draw on from ‘Say What You Will’ from Kennedy’s latest solo album in terms of life philosophy.

In terms of songwriting, the exact balance has been struck between strong powerful intros followed by great melodies and thoroughly perfected compositions. It’s difficult to single out personal favourites, as this is pretty much a no filler album, but some that stand out a bit more than others are ‘Disregarded’ with the contrast between its catchy tune and fierce riffs borderlining with industrial metal; the epic finale ‘Slave To Master’ (changing themes and moods beautifully, with some Rage Against the Machine vibes thrown in the mix amongst the nearly nostalgic solos and thoughtful lyrics), and ‘Hang By Thread’, the compulsory fabulous ballad, the intro to which may remind you of ‘Watch Over You’. It’s the kind of song Myles has been creating in his solo works, delicious and mindful. Tremonti‘s own (heavier) influence is also felt in the fierce riffs and heavy rhythm sections, some examples being ‘Power Down’ and ‘Tested and Able’ (beautifully softening the heavier instrumentation with the clear tune and the sweet vibes of Mark’s voice).

All songs have been composed to perfection, blending different substyles of metal into what we know as Alter Bridge’s unique sound. It is fascinating how this sound is being preserved and developed, given the fact that Alter Bridge is one of its members’ few avenues keeping them busy nowadays. Both Tremonti and Kennedy released new albums with their own acts in 2024-2025, both undertook massive tours (The End Will Show Us How and Return To The Kingdom), and, of course, let’s not forget another major event, Creed’s reunion. How on earth they manage to keep their creative juices flowing in each of their projects, in ways unique to each one of them, is something only true geniuses can do.

Lyrics wise, both their latest albums are ingrained with similar life philosophies, about slowing down, letting go and rising above things, which finds its next level of manifestation in Alter Bridge’s eight album. What has always been one of the great things about this band is their search for light, acknowledgement of the beauty of life and quest for the good in humans, despite all the hate, wars, and humanity’s flaws. Being in control, taking responsibility for our own actions, rising above the madness, looking for purpose and sense, is a credo that not an awful lot of metal bands live by. There is no hatred or darkness oozing from their lyrics (“Revenge is fantasy”), giving us just one more hope that all will be well one day.
