The bonds between rock and country music run deep; from Thin Lizzy to Bon Jovi via modern artists such as Jacob Bryant, there’s been a history of crossover and cross-pollination between the two genres. While Cory Marks mainly exists in the country realm, his sound is wide and expansive and will appeal no only to his core audience, but those with a penchant for rock and metal, too. Finding Cory in defiant mood, his latest album Sorry For Nothing Vol. 2 is the second instalment of his 2024 album (unsurprisingly titled Sorry For Nothing) and finds Cory mining a rich seam to deliver eleven diverse tracks that never fail to hold the listener’s undivided attention.

Released just ten months after its predecessor, Sorry For Nothing Vol. 2 is very much a continuation of Cory’s previous album, but it is certainly not a carbon copy. This is an album that crackles and fizzes with creativity, and it is a sparkle that’s best exemplified by opening track ‘Hangman’. Swinging like an executioner’s rope, ‘Hangman’ gets straight down to business with an insanely catchy riff, and when the band kick in at the 30-second mark, it is with neck-snapping force. The riff that forms the central part of the song perfectly encapsulates that crossover between metal and country and could easily have been lifted from Metallica’s Black Album. In fact, both genres have a certain outlaw and outsider aesthetic and if you’re a fan of W.A.S.P.’s ‘Forever Free’ then you’ll find a spiritual home in ‘Are You With Me’, a track that’s full of soaring guitars and pounding drums (in short, everything that makes music great) and is sure to liven up any evening.

We seem to be at a point in music’s long and storied history where the album as an art form is making a comeback; no longer just a bunch of singles, but a collection of songs that ebb and flow and take the listener on a musical journey and that’s exactly what Sorry For Nothing Vol. 2 does. After the explosive nature of the first three tracks, things kick down a gear with the ballad ‘The Heart Breaks When It Wants To’ before they ignite again with the aptly-titled ‘Wide Ride’. It’s a constant flux, with the faster tunes creating a foil for the slower (and vice versa) and the result of never quite knowing what comes next means that the record hold the listener in thrall.

Full of stadium-filling, fist-pumping anthems, country rockers and irresistible road songs, Sorry For Nothing Vol. 2 is an album that further cements Cory Mark’s reputation as one of country’s most vital artists and is another sure step towards global domination.
