When it comes to rock music, Scotland is a country that punches well above its weight. Consistently producing cutting edge bands (of every stripe), it’s a nation that seems intent on making the world a heavier place, with one razor sharp riff after another. Case in point being Dead Pony, a quartet from Glasgow who distil a wide and varied range of influences into a genre-defying sound. Originally known as Crystal, a name change to their current moniker in 2020 found Dead Pony recharged, reenergised and ready to conquer the world, and latest EP, Eat My Dust!, is another sure step towards that goal.
With all the plaudits and awards that Dead Pony have picked up on their journey, it would have been understandable if the band had rested upon their laurels and settled into a formulaic groove. That the band are constantly scanning new musical horizons and sonic panoramas becomes immediately obvious by opening track ‘What If?’. Posing all the questions such a title conjures, it gives no clue as to what to expect from the rest of the EP; its otherworldly intro is akin to stepping through a magic door into another world, yet a transmogrification occurs at the halfway point, the song becoming a beauteous beast, like the yin and yang, fire and ice, the polar opposites finding an easy equilibrium. The main takeaway is the duality that exists within the band’s sound: songs such as ‘Eat My Dust!’ and ‘Freak Like Me’ have a buoyancy and a strong pop sensibility (I don’t mean pop in a dirty way, rather a love of melody), but are heavy as hell with beats that detonate and riffs that could crush a man. With lyrics that poke around in the darkest recesses of the human psyche an interesting dichotomy is created between the heavy and the lithe, songs such as ‘Fury’ pull the listener in two directions, kind of like the rope in a musical tug-o’-war.
The majority of tracks on Eat My Dust! eschew stereotypical song structures and chord progressions. Excluding the brief intro ‘What If?’, only two of the tracks are sub six minutes (barely), yet they never feel forced or unnecessarily elongated, the pop sensibility being the anchor around which tempests like ‘BOOM!’ swirl. It all adds up to an assured effort from a band riding a wave of confidence and finds Dead Pony very much alive and kicking.
