We are no strangers to Delilah Bon here at The Midlands Rock, having caught her explosive appearance at this year’s Download Festival. It was confrontational and mind-blowing (quite literally!) and set the standard for what was to come. In terms of energy it set an almost unobtainable level, yet it’s one she has reached with her latest album, Evil, Hate Filled Female. Featuring fourteen tracks delivered in her trademark “Brat Style”, these songs take aim at a variety of targets in typically unapologetic style, whilst simultaneously creating an empowering space for women, non-binary and LGBTQ+ communities worldwide…so buckle up tight because this album promises to be a raucous ride.
As a portent of what is to come, Delilah Bon (the alter ego of Lauren Tate) comes out swinging with opening track ‘Hey World’, delivering a hard rap over a punchy beat, and if there was any doubt to Delilah’s prowess, then they are put to rest by ‘Hey World’. It plants her flag firmly in rock’s turf and just dares you to try upending it. From this moment onwards Delilah gives a tongue lashing to all her detractors and those who would try to negate her. Yet, Delilah is blessed with a well stocked arsenal and understands that there is always more than one mode of attack, and subsequently this album tries on different musical clothing and each track has it’s own unique feel, yet it is stitched together by its own eclecticism and, of course, Delilah’s distinctive vocal style. She has an amazing way with words, not only in her lyricism, but her phrasing; listen and marvel as vowels are extended and words are compressed to rhymes that appear to be made from chewing gum. They’re wonderfully pliable and will bounce around the listener’s cranium long after the disc has stopped spinning.
Having wowed crowds at Download and 2000 Trees, Delilah Bon has proved that she can carry that energy onto a disc, and this album does swing like a live gig. This is a very visual type of music that will plant strong images in the mind’s eye and as ‘My Girlz’ bursts from the speakers you can almost see Delilah cranking it out on stage, along with all the characters Lauren Tate brings to life, the brightest of which is Delilah Bon.
