As our age continues to be characterised by war, famine and pestilence, what’s needed now more than ever is a raunchy rock n’ roll album. Enter stage left the artist known as Des Rocs (Danny Rocco) and his irresistibly bold and unapologetic sound. Having played in bands since his early teens, it’s safe to say that Danny knows a thing or two about music, and he brings all that experience to bear on his third long player, To Hell And Back. Featuring an explosive eleven tracks, this is an album for everybody who has been through Hades and come out the other side, battered and emboldened, and as such it bristles with positivity and is the perfect tonic to our troubled times.

As someone who spends most of his time mainlining music, I’m here to tell you that opening shots don’t come much better than ‘When The Love Is Gone’. It’s a track that gets To Hell And Back off to an energetic start and finds Des Rocs kicking down the door to your cranium with a drum beat that suggests he’s going to stick around for awhile. With a beat that bounces around like a ship on a stormy sea, ‘When The Love Is Gone’ makes the perfect mission statement: marinated in melody, it encapsulates all that’s good about rock music. With a huge sing along chorus and buzzsaw guitars, it immediately sweeps the listener along on waves of effervescence; it’s the musical equivalent of being on a roller coaster, and once you’re strapped into that seat you’ve no option but to sit back and enjoy the ride. And just like being on a big dipper, To Hell And Back is full of twists and turns, ensuring that it flows like an old school album with the Zeppelin-esque ‘Fall Together’ nestling next to the bluesy ‘Sing Me Back To Sleep’ quite effortlessly, and all threaded together by a tightly-focused versatility. It’s that versatile nature that ensures To Hell And Back never becomes staid, like the proverbial rolling stone that is in constant motion, there’s never a danger of ‘The Riders Of Red Hook’ becoming staid.

Produced in collaboration with Joe Chicarelli (The Strokes, White Stripes), To Hell And Back sounds absolutely massive, employing the full dynamic range to stretch your ears to the further points of human hearing. Yet, paradoxically, this album has an intimate, personal quality derived from the themes explored in the lyrics and the roots of songs such as ‘The King’ will dig deep into your psyche. It creates an overarching feeling of unity and togetherness, and in our age of fragmentation, that’s got to be a good thing.
