Some music needs to be experienced in the physical format. If you are of a certain age you’ll remember lying on your bed, devouring an an album’s sleeve with your eyes whilst the spinning vinyl soothed your ears. It made for a more three-dimensional experience, a world in which you could lose yourself for 45-minutes and it is into that aesthetic that Driveway Ceiling’s Death Of The Walden Newspaper Co. taps. Getting its first physical release courtesy of Independent Project records, it’s a concept album that’s subversive and immersive, it demands that you dive head first into its bottomless depths, but be warned; you might be gone for some time.
Existing somewhere betwixt Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper’s, Driveway Ceiling’s debut was like an inky broadsheet that somehow materialised in the digital era. It employs many devices that characterised long players from the album era, opening track ‘Silver River Dawn’ planting seeds that will come to fruition as the record progresses and foreshadowing themes that will echo throughout. It’s akin to stepping through, a door into another world, the band providing a mild sedative that cocoons the listener in a fuzzy Novocaine buzz, altering your perception of time (and reality) and setting things up nicely for the following ‘Yellow Journalism’, a swirling psychedelic soup that mixes indie rock, baroque and bedroom pop, the backward masked guitar being a wormhole that transports us to the jaunty ‘Black Swan’. Despite containing fifteen tracks and each song inhabiting a unique sonic space, Death Of The Walden Newspaper Co. flows like one long piece of music, making this the kind of album that can quite easily be consumed in one sitting. In fact, an uninterrupted listen is recommended; whilst tracks such as the sublime ‘Mr. Walden’ can be enjoyed individually, the interludes that pepper the album won’t work so well when taken out of context. Yet as a whole body of work with a creative arc it works perfectly, an invisible thread stitching the record together; the flowing water that forms the album’s outro also provides the introduction meaning you could listen to Death Of The Walden Newspaper Co. on a constant loop if you so wished, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend eternity.
The care and attention to detail that Independent Project Records expend on their releases makes them the prefect custodians of Driveway Ceiling’s debut album and rather than being yesterday’s ‘paper, Death Of The Walden Newspaper Co. is a record for all time.
