Genesis – From Genesis to Revelation 4CD / Blu Ray Edition

Rolling back the years all the way to 1969, this latest release of From Genesis to Revelation comes in a very nice 4CD / Blu Ray package that has been put together by the good folks at Cherry Red Records. With the approval of Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Anthony Phillips, the Genesis treasure trove has been opened up to include various oddities and rarities alongside three versions of the original album, highlighted by new mixes by Stephen W Tayler, who is notable for doing a fine job with the Hawkwind back catalogue. The Blu Ray also includes bonus video content of Banks, Gabriel and Rutherford at AIR Studios in London discussing the album and reviewing the new mixes. And this makes a welcome change from the trio being asked to speak about the usual topics such as The Lamb, Suppers Ready, reunions etc…

Of course, From Genesis… has never really been considered their genuine debut album, history has often afforded the honour to Trespass; with this album being seen as a collection of songs by enthusiastic teenagers learning their craft as musicians and songwriters and still far from the finished article. Originally, they has little to no control over the end product which was issued with additional string and horn arrangements which Tayler has trimmed back in the new mix, providing the bands instruments, particularly those of Banks and Phillips, a lot more depth and clarity. And although much of the music is very simplistic pop, there are certainly moments here that hint at what was to come, such as ‘In the Beginning’, ‘Silent Sun’ and ‘The Conqueror’, and the undoubted potential of Gabriel’s voice.

History tells us that the album sold approximately 650 copies, with it often being filed in the religious music section at record stores, but it nevertheless offers a fascinating look back at the formative days of Genesis. With ownership being outside of the bands control, this has often been reissued over the years under various guises but this is very much as comprehensive a collection as you could wish for, and clearly now comes with their stamp of approval. With the depth of bonus content and a 68-page illustrated book that also includes an extensive essay featuring contributions from Banks, Gabriel, Phillips and Rutherford it is something Genesis enthusiasts will be keen to add to their collections.
