Formed in Trelleborg, Sweden, Imminence have carved out a unique niche for themselves with a metalcore sound that blends raw emotion and visceral power to great effect. Formed in 2009 and settling on their current moniker the following year, the band dazzled the world with a series of EP’s that were equal parts catchy, crushing, and dripped with creativity. Those releases set an impossibly high standard for the rest of their career, but it’s a level the band have constantly strived for meaning they’ve left an impeccable discography in their wake. Long player number six, Axis Mundi, sends things through the stratosphere with a selection of songs that meld the modern with the antiquated and in doing so, Imminence have produced an album not only for our times, but for all time.
Looking back at Imminence’s recorded output, there has been a clear developmental arc; the band forging forwards whilst dragging elements of the past with them. Evolution, not revolution, would be a good way to describe the band’s approach, they been honing and refining their sound as their career progressed, bring a wealth of experience to each new release, and that is very much in evidence on opening track ‘Twisting In The Wind’. They don’t feel the need to arrive with all guitars blazing, rather the album begins in an understated manner, it’s insidious and slowly digs roots into your soul like a tree in a forest. It has a kind of hypnotic effect and is akin to stepping through a door into a magical world, and that means when the song bursts into life at the 50-second mark it is with the force of a Nordic sky being cracked by thunder. It’s indicative of the tension of opposites that run throughout this album; the calm before the storm, the light and the shade, the ancient and the modern, all act as a foil for the other meaning Axis Mundi is akin to walking through a hall of mirrors as sound is fractured and reflected in all directions. It means that songs such as ‘If Not Now, When’ and ‘Leviathan’ are painted with a wide palette, they become three-dimensional sonic vistas in which the listener can wander and become lost in their vivid and evocative soundscapes.
Veering between the heaviest metalcore and ethereal, otherworldly moments makes Axis Mundi an album that is in perpetual motion. Even within songs there are cogs inside cogs and wheels within wheels, the result are fluid songs like closer ‘Exodus’ which find the band sculpting sound in the same way a potter shapes clay. It makes Axis Mundi the proverbial rolling stone; there’s no chance of this album gathering moss or becoming staid. It gives no indication of where Imminence will go next musically, but one thing’s for sure, it’s bound to be interesting.
