When it comes to creating great art, tribulation is so often the incubator and if proof is required look no further than Lords Of Salem’s latest album. Conceived at a time of external changes and internal friction, Supersonic Vampire Pussy is a record shaped by the circumstances in which it was produced and as such is a suitably gnarly, angry record that leaps straight for the listener’s throat and stays there for thirty-seven blood soaked minutes. Featuring nine tracks that weld the cool theatrical swagger of the Alice Cooper Band to the hard industrial punch of White Zombie, Lords Of Salem play a unique brand of metal and Supersonic Vampire Pussy is your ticket to their evil carnival.
As mission statements go, opening track ‘Hills Have Eyes’ is darn near perfect; it’s bold, bombastic and unruly, and sets the tone for the rest of the record. Evidencing a sense of urgency, there’s very little time wasted on fancy introductions, just an air raid siren that acts as a warning for less hardy souls and then the band are off, delivering a song that swings from speaker to speaker with wrecking ball force. If you want to know just how heavy four people can get you need look no further than ‘Hills Have Eyes’. Aided by a production that fills every cubic inch of space, the band throw their weight around like a heavyweight boxer, ensuring that every beat hits like a well aimed punch. In addition, some well chosen samples create atmosphere and give the songs a sense of time and place (‘Blood Orgy’). When samples are used excessively they can detract from the music and deflect the listener’s attention, yet throughout this album they are employed to embellish the songs and give things a cinematic feel and Supersonic Vampire Pussy could quite easily be the soundtrack to a really cool horror film (albeit the most depraved kind), and songs such as ‘1000 Ways To Die’ will fill your head with all sorts of demonic visions. Yet, for all of their brute strength, Lords Of Salem never lose sight of important stuff like melody and song structure which means that each one of these nine tracks is a certified earworm that’ll make home in your memory bank, and as such you’ll find yourself singing the lyrics of ‘Supersonic Vampire Pussy’ at the most inappropriate moments.
The backgrounds to each four members of Lords Of Salem (Postel, vocals; Holly, guitar; Marple, bass; Ole, drums) are kept deliberately opaque, so it really does feel as if they are mutants from beyond the grave who just happen to play a kick ass brand of industrial rock. There’s an interesting aesthetic hanging over the band that recalls classic The Misfits, and just like that New York crew, Lords Of Salem have an effortless crossover appeal that will adhere them to fans of industrial, metal and punk in equal measure. Supersonic Vampire Pussy is the sound of Lords Of Salem rising from the underground to become the rulers of this world.
