When Marillion released their eleventh studio album in 1999, they were at a commercial nadir. After being dropped by EMI, marillion.com was their last of three albums distributed by Castle Communications and released on their own imprint Intact. It was notable for being their first long player not to crack the Top 40, staying on the chart for just one week and birthed no singles (although this reissue teases with ‘Go!’ as a single). Whilst they might have been at something of an ebb, creatively they were at a peak and they delivered a selection of nine songs that shined light in all directions. Whilst much music from the late ‘90s sounds very much of its time, Marillion’s eleventh still has an air of freshness surrounding it, and if proof were needed to its eternal appeal, look no further than this loving reissue from earMUSIC.

Recorded at the band’s own The Racket Club studio in Buckinghamshire, there was a siege mentality surrounding Marillion, a feeling that it really was the band verses the rest of the world. Subsequently, marillion.com was self-produced (although Steven Wilson provided additional work on five songs) and while it can often be problematic when artists are aligned too closely with their own work, the feeling that Marillion had their collective backs to the wall comes shining through every note of this album and gives the record its unique feel. That uniqueness comes from the crystalline production and turns tracks such as opener ‘A Legacy’ (and, indeed, the whole album) into stars sparkling brightly in a pitch black sky. It means that marillion.com is at once an intimate affair, the confessional nature of ‘Interior Lulu’ creating a tangible bond between performer and listener, but it is also wide and expansive with the sax-laden, punchy ‘Deserve’ sounding immense, the band employing the full dynamic range to pull your ears in two directions, not unlike a victim stretched on a rack (but in the nicest possible way, of course). This is an album that sounds as vibrant and vivacious as the day it was released, and the 2026 remix that furnishes this recording suggests it’ll sound fresh many years hence.

Marillion have always been a band to do something novel for their fans and 1999 found them debuting songs from marillion.com in full at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. That complete recording (previously unreleased) sees the light of day as the bonus material on this deluxe edition, and what becomes apparent is how well these songs transfer to the live environment, but considering the quality of opening couplet, ‘Go!’ and ‘Under The Sun’, that’s really no surprise. The band’s inherent storytelling means that the tracks take on a new identity when performed live, with new cuts like ‘Rich’ more than holding their own against classic songs such as ‘Uninvited Guest’. The crowd are given prominent position in the mix and it serves to make this an authentic live document.

marillion.com was released at a pivotal moment in the Marillion story, yet it was an album that found them sowing the seeds of independence that are still flourishing today. Available on vinyl, and as a 3CD+Blu-Ray media book, the latter of which includes the album in high resolution and surround sound, a documentary and the ‘Shot In The Dark (Zodiac)’ concert video, makes this an essential purchase not only for Marillion fans, but progressive rock aficionados in general.
