Ocerco – A Desolação

Irresistible…

Signal Rex: Website; Bandcamp

Release date: 5 February 2016

Review by Jason Guest

The second EP from Portugal’s Ocerco – and first to these ears – is pretty good. It’s hard, it’s heavy, and it’s got a dark density to it that is impenetrable. Three linked tracks, each are colossal, a towering edifice of sludge, doom, and post black might and madness. Tortured and torn, opener ‘O Colapso’ quickly destroys all in its path before forging ahead in a torrent of blast beats, intense and distressed riffs, and an agonised vocal.

With ‘O Ocaso’, the textures deepen, the dissonant and the discordant collide, and the track’s twisted journey moves from full-on offensive through brooding bellicosity and dark meditation. And the eight-minute title track, a supremely heavy piece that plots a tortured and piercing arc, is vast, captivating and cathartic, the tension and release and the hypnotic pull of the track, like the others, is irresistible. With their first EP somewhere out there (only 100 copies were released; never to be released again, apparently) and this limited to 500 copies, I’d snap this up if I were you.
