Formed in Tampa, Florida in 2008, Set It Off are a rock band made by and for music fans. When vocalist Cody Carson dropped out of college and invested all his funds into starting a band, that was the kind of move that only a music obsessive would make and it immediately adhered him to like minded individuals. Thankfully, his self-belief was rewarded and Set It Off went on to release an impressive discography full of alternative rock anthems. After teasing their latest album with a tantalising trail of singles, the band finally unleash their sixth album, the eponymously-titled, Set It Off.

A self-titled album is usually reserved for a band’s debut, or at a moment of rebirth and Set It Off certainly sound revitalised with opening track ‘PATHOLOGICAL’. It’s worthy of its “caps rage” title and finds Set It Off coming out of their corner with all fists flying and throwing their considerable weight around like a heavyweight boxer at a prize fight. It’s a wrecking ball swing with which the band operate. Cody Carson unleashes his vocals with machine gun rapidity and the words, full of bite and venom, connect like well-aimed bullets. The production is bold and brash and places great emphasis on Maxx Danziger’s drums, they explode like a series of depth charges and ensure that the song hits with the requisite punch. With some razor sharp synths adding texture and equally cutting guitar from Zach DeWall, the song exudes a certain amount of danger and sets things up nicely for the rest of the album.

With over half of the album’s tracks clocking in at under three-minutes, there’s a refreshing brevity to Set It Off. They don’t use two notes when one will suffice and the album is all the more powerful for its direct attack. However, don’t mistake this approach for lack of invention because nothing could be further from the truth. Songs such as ‘SWITCH’ are overflowing with good ideas, from the unusual rhythms to the vocal inflections via the swirling guitars. Yet, there’s no denying that the band’s direct attack makes sure that cuts such as ‘Fake Ass Friends’ are delivered with the requisite bite.

You feel that with Set It Off the band have finally made the album they always wanted to make. That’s not to say that previous outings were in anyway incomplete or substandard, rather they were staging posts to take the band to where they are now. Prior dealings with rap, pop, punk, rock, alternative metal and hardcore were part of their learning curve and they’ve now come to fruition with the aforementioned ‘PATHOLOGICAL’, the stormy ‘Vicious Cycle’, the jaunty ‘Creating Monsters’ and thoughtful closer ‘Worst Case Scenario’.
