After releasing a tantalising trail of singles, each building upon the success of the former, German quartet Seven Blood finally unleash their debut album. After two years of struggle and strife, triumph and tragedy, you feel that this crew from Suhl have waited for the optimum moment to drop Life Is Just A Phase and with the world precariously perched on the edge of oblivion it seems times couldn’t be more conducive for Seven Blood’s hard, yet melodic, sound. Featuring eleven tracks of the best in modern metal, Life Is Just A Phase is the start of big things.
As befits a debut album, Seven Blood don’t waste time with shadow boxing and fancy feints, preferring to immediately land a knockout blow with opening salvo ‘House ≠ Home’. With a steamroller of a riff and a rhythm section that arrives with all fists flying, Seven Blood don’t so much knock politely of the door, rather they kick it open with size 10 Dr Martens. However, it seems that Seven Blood have wise heads on young shoulders because they’re not all brute strength, far from it, and they insert lither passages which serve to act as a foil to make the heavier sections all the more…heavy. Therefore, listening to ‘House ≠ Home’ (and, indeed, the whole album) is not unlike stepping into a hall of mirrors, with sound fractured and reflected in all directions, the result can be fairly dizzying (but in the best way possible, of course). Likewise, the gruff vocals on the following ‘Cold Eyes’ serves a similar purpose and provides contrast to Azaria Nasiri’s crystalline vocals, the two creating a marked contrast and the result is a sound that pulls the listener in two directions. It’s this constant push and pull, the light and shade, that will characterise Life Is Just A Phase and will thread the album together as it traverses through eleven diverse tracks.
With a lyricism that’s just as weighty as the music, Seven Blood cut to the very heart of the human condition and it’s in perfect sync with the likes of ‘Not Your Misery. Yet, no matter how heavy things might get (both musically and emotionally), the band never lose sight of important stuff like song structure and melody and that makes the likes of ‘As We Bleed’ the equivalent of wrecking balls that swing from speaker to speaker and demolish all in their way. It also means that these tunes will transfer well to the live environment and are tailor made for moshing and stage diving.
With final track ‘Fall From The Sky’ posing as many questions as it answers, it feels as if Seven Blood are merely starting on their journey…and now is the time for you to join them.
