With August being a pretty lean month for gig goers outside of festivals, it was no surprise to find a healthy turn out at KK’s Steel Mill for the welcome return of The Dead Daisies. Given they have had so many members pass through their ranks over the years, it is always worth reminding ourselves of the current configuration, and this time around band leader David Lowy is accompanied by John Corabi and Doug Aldrich along with the dynamic rhythm section of Tommy Clufetos and Michael Devin. What followed was a polished performance from the Daisies, a band who can always be relied upon to get the crowd heavily involved in the show and do everything in their power to make everyone from the front row to the back is having a damn good time.
Enjoying his second stint as frontman, John Corabi makes an immediate impact on the opening pair of ‘Long Way to Go’ and ‘Rise Up’. The guitar duo of Aldrich and Lowy complement each other to perfection, the former living up to his reputation as a modern day Guitar Hero and the latter content to mostly stay out of the limelight and leave the showmanship to his bandmate. Moving through the likes of ‘Bustle and Flow’ and ‘Light ‘Em Up’, it was then time for Corabi to take the stage alone with just his acoustic guitar, serenading the crowd with the heartfelt and sincere ‘Love That’ll Never Be’.
The second half of the set was mostly cover versions, the majority of which were included on the bands two covers albums to date, 2019’s Locked and Loaded and Lookin’ for Trouble, the blues influenced record that came out a few months ago. So, we got to hear the Daisies take on ‘Black Betty’, ‘Fortunate Son’ and ‘Midnight Moses’ amongst others, all of which took their blueprint from the original versions, but were given the Dead Daisies makeover to make them that little bit different. Returning for the obligatory encore, it was back to 2018’s Burn it Down for the fast and furious ‘Resurrected’, before it all came to a conclusion with a riotous version of ‘Helter Skelter’.
A solid celebration of good time hard rock, The Dead Daisies always set out to deliver a killer show from start to finish and tonight was no exception. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the audience at KK’s Steel Mill are welcoming them back for more of the same.
