Things have moved pretty fast for The Light since their formation in 2024. Not only have they scored a contract with Fastball music and released two well-received singles, the band also come out swinging with their eponymously-titled debut album, The Light. Featuring vocalist Nick Antonelli, guitarist Holger Terhorst and bassist Alex Scherz (the enigmatic Sven played drums on this record), the band have found an obvious chemistry and lock in to create a sound that is far bigger than their constituent parts. There’s a new band in town, and they’re going to be around for a while.

On hearing opening track ‘Swinging’, you might think that The Light have been misnamed. It is (like the majority of this album) a song that ululates with wrecking ball force; it flexes its considerable muscle right from the very first note. As a statement of intent it is perfect, there’s a new band on the scene and they’re staking out their territory and planting their flag firmly in rock’s fertile ground. This album derives it’s power from several sources, firstly the production is bold and brash and is reminiscent of that which Bob Rock gave to Metallica’s Black Album. It pushes all the needles to the red and threatens to burst from the speakers at any moment. Secondly, The Light deal in a riff heavy brand of rock which forsakes solos (though not exclusively) and it gives the band an unstoppable feel, an uncontainable force that radiates a sense of danger. However, don’t mistake the band’s power for being one-dimensional because The Light is chock full of great ideas, with each of the ten tracks having their own identity. Yet, there’s no denying that the heavier end of the spectrum is The Light’s natural habitat and things don’t get much weightier than ‘War’, a damning indictment of conflict that’s introduced by a montage of exploding shells and gunfire, and marches from speaker to speaker like an invading army. ‘Toxic Dependence’ is dark and oppressive (because that’s what dependency is) whilst ‘Train To Nowhere’ is the kind of unstoppable locomotive I alluded to earlier.

As with their music, The Light’s lyricism avoids the usual tropes and deals with topics such as mental frailty, personal growth and the fight against oppression. It’s all heady, visceral stuff and when combined with the band’s punchy sound makes for an arresting experience. While the band might take the listener to some dark places musically and lyrically, there is always a note of optimism to contrast their shade and proves that without darkness there can’t be The Light.
