Uncured – Warpath

With some bands you only have to hear a few notes and you know they are on the cusp of greatness, and that’s certainly the case with New Jersey metal crew Uncured. With a contemporary sound that’ll also appeal to more conservative metalheads, they’ve produced an album in Warpath that bristles with attitude and energy and will find the band blazing a trail towards the world’s biggest stages. After 300 shows, including performances with the likes of Lacuna Coil, Jinjer and Bad Wolves, it feels as if the world is finally ready for the unstoppable quartet that it Uncured.

Attesting to Uncured’s sense of drive and purpose, opening shot ‘Bleed Me Dry’ doesn’t mess around. Like a bullet that suddenly appears between your eyes, there’s no warning about what’s about to hit and it is all the more powerful for it. With an insanely catchy groove, this is a new slant on metalcore and one that will adhere itself to your memory bank like a leech. ‘Bleed Me Dry’ is, like the whole album, in constant motion and doesn’t stay in one sonic space for long. Subsequently we get clean vocals next to the gruff, lithe sections nestling alongside the heavy, and the band’s genius lies in making these sudden shifts flow seamlessly. With the minimum space between the tracks, the whole album flows like a river of silk and should really come with some kind of health warning (i.e. may cause sudden outbreaks of moshing).

With the majority of the songs hovering around the three-minute mark, Uncured prove themselves the ultimate editors, they don’t use two notes when one will suffice and subsequently tracks such as ‘Fall In Line’ take the most direct line to what it’s all about. Speeding past like a bullet train, Warpath doesn’t hang about, but its brevity is also its strength; songs such as ‘Crucify’ pack more into three-and-a-half minutes than most bands put into a whole career and a special note must be made of the band’s lyricism which contains pearls of wisdom which will, as with the music, constantly prick up your ears.

A neat cover of Nine Inch Nail’s ‘Closer’ brings the album to a cataclysmic conclusion and one that’ll beat a warpath to the stereo of every self-respecting metalhead.
