Formed by friends who shared a love of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jnr., and Waylon Jennings (which makes them immediately cool), Whiskey Myers have been busy enchanting the world with their unique Southern rock/country/blues blend. A journey begun in 2007 has found them graduating from dive bars and small clubs towards the biggest stages whilst making pit stops in the Billboard Charts along the way. Latest album, the aptly-titled Whomp Whack Thunder, is certain to continue their upward trajectory and puts some rocket fuel in their tank for a listen that never ceases to amaze.

Whomp Whack Thunder is Whiskey Myers’ seventh album but if there’s any adverse effects from being in a hard-working, hell-raisin’ rock band, it doesn’t show. Opening shot ‘Time Bomb’ explodes with unbridled effervescence and sends shards of glistening sonics shattering in every direction. The drums tick with metronomic precision (like an actual bomb primed for detonation), the guitars soar like eagles caught on the breeze whilst Cody Cannon’s vocals, oak-aged and tobacco-hued, add an air of authority. It all adds up to an arresting experience; this is music that grabs you by the collar, getting up close and personal, so much so that you can almost feel the spittle flying and the bass pumping your chest. In short, it’s everything good music should be, it’s hard to ignore and when the likes of ‘Break These Chains’ and ‘Rock N’ Roll’ come bursting from the speakers you have no choice but to obey their call; this isn’t music you sit back and passively consume, rather it’s a sound that alters your very physiology and is guaranteed to get all but the infirm and frail up and shaking their stuff.

While the collective known as Whiskey Myers have a propensity to turn their amps towards the top of the dial, they are certainly not one-dimensional. There’s plenty of variety on offer in terms of song structure and tempos, and with no two songs inhabiting the exact same sonic space, Whomp Whack Thunder has the feel of an album in perpetual motion, a wheel that’s constantly rotating. Yet, it’s a record threaded together by the band’s trademark swing which finds the band heavy, yet fleet of foot, and punching their way through eleven tracks with the grace of a welterweight boxer.

Whiskey Myers have produced an album that has an effortless crossover appeal that will not only sate their growing army of fans but will attract many new admirers, too. A triumphant return.
