With the meteoric rise of bands such as Sleep Token, it has been argued that we have reached the end of genre. That may or may not be true, but one thing is undeniable; genres are mixing and fusing like never before. If you want to know how seemingly disparate sounds can be stitched together into a cohesive whole, look no further than French band TSS (formerly known as The Sunday Sadness). With a wild blend of emo, metalcore, synthwave and alternative rock (and more), TSS serve up a sound that’s constantly evolving like some shapeshifting alien. Their latest album, End Of Time, finds the band in ruddy health and serving up a (lucky) thirteen tracks that are fleet of foot, never failing to throw surprising moves.
End Of Time opens with the title track and it gives no clue as to what room you’ve stepped into. It’s a rather discombobulating slab of darkwave which creates a rather ominous tone, and one that is shattered by the arrival of ‘Notes In The Dark’. Listening to the two tracks back-to-back creates a big dynamic, but nothing can prepare us for being inside ‘Notes In The Dark’. With lyrics sung in both English and French, the sonic shifts between heavy guitar riffs and drum n’ bass beat, and the contrast between the lithe and heavy sections, it feels as if the band are spinning the listener around and around, the effect is really quite dizzying and slightly disorientating. It means that End Of Time is the type of album your experience rather than passively receive, as such this is a long player best listened to like an old school album to appreciate it’s ebb and flow and ululation.
Fusing different genres is not as easy as it might seem; get that mix wrong and you could be left with a tangled mess. However, get that fusion right and you’ll have an explosion from your speakers, and that’s precisely what End Of Time serves up. Listening to this album is not unlike stepping into a hall of mirrors with sound fractured and reflected in all directions. It’s also multicoloured with TSS painting their sound from a wide palette along all points along the spectrum. Despite the dark lyricism of tracks such as ‘Something in the way’ and the equally heavy riffs, this is an enjoyable album and it will be interesting to see how these tracks will transfer to the live environment (my guess is very well).
End Of Time is a record that’s going to take TSS from their native France and place them on the international stage. End Of Time is just the beginning.
