It’s undeniably true that hard times create equally hard art, and if proof were ever needed, look no further than German rock band Future Palace. Their music mirrors our quarrelsome times not only sonically, but emotionally, too, and there’s a psychological depth to the band’s sound that reaches into the deepest recesses of the listeners soul. Fusing post-hardcore rage and bombastic breakdowns to experimental electronica and a sublime song sensibility makes for an intriguing tension of opposites and ensures latest album, Resurgence, is long player that shines its dark light in all directions. Featuring a dozen death-defying tracks, Resurgence finds Future Palace reinvigorated, rejuvenated and ready to take on the world.
Formed in Berlin in 2018, Future Palace released their first single the following year, with their debut album dropping in 2020. They’ve punctuated the intervening years with a series of well received singles, the band constantly refining their sound as they progressed, with their fourth album, Resurgence, being the ultimate distillation of their sound. As you’d expect from a band in perpetual motion, Future Palace aren’t here to waste time and opening shot ‘Deep Blue’ immediately makes its presence felt. Like waves crashing the shore, this is a bold way to make an introduction and is indicative of the band’s approach; melodic, but with an emotional intensity, it swings between the two poles, serving up a song that packs the punch of a heavyweight boxer, only delivered with the fleet footwork of a welterweight. Vocalist Maria Lessing is just as versatile, flitting between heavenly, angelic birdsong and satanic shrieks (sometimes both in the same line), and it is this duality between the heavy and the lithe, the dark and the light, that will echo throughout this album and keeps the listener engaged over the forty-minute running time.
With drummer Johannes Früchtenicht and guitarist Manuel Kohlert providing a fluctuating sound, Maria presents equally turbulent lyrics that detail personal struggles, loneliness, isolation, and depression, with words and music combining to create a sense of hope and the human spirit’s strength to overcome adversity. It makes tracks such as ‘Ebb And Flow’ aptly-titled, the songs ululating like living, breathing, organic entities. Despite the emotional depths to which Future Palace descend, there’s a strong focus on song structure, meaning that each of these twelve tracks has potential single material. Resurgence signposts a bright future.
