A new release from Cherry Red records, this marks the first time this show from Camden Palace in December 1984 has been made officially available on CD. The DVD of the show goes back a long way and was originally available in 1985 on VHS as Play Dirty Live. So here we have both restored discs that feature the same 14 tracks, wrapped up together in a very appealing digi-pack and with comprehensive liner notes pulled together from new interviews with Kim McAuliffe.

This period in the history of Girlschool was one of upheaval and change, with Kelly Johnson having departed the band and almost bankrupt Bronze Records dropping them from the label, leading them to sign with US based Mercury Records. By now the band had expanded to a five piece, ever present members Kim and Denise Dufort being joined by Gil Weston-Jones on bass, Cris Bonacci on guitars and Jackie Bodimead on vocals. They were mid way through recording Running Wild at the time of this show, and took the opportunity to include several new songs in the set alongside some of the usual crowd-pleasers. The newer songs have a harder edge than their studio counterparts, with tunes like ‘Nowhere To Run’ and ‘Love Is A Lie’ sitting comfortably alongside old favourites such as ‘Hit and Run’ and ‘Emergency’. The DVD, naturally, reflects the limitations of recording a gig on a tight budget back in the 80’s, but still makes for entertaining viewing. Although Running Wild would only see a release in the US and be heavily keyboard-laden, this live performance proves that the band could still rock out with the best of them.

A very nicely put together package from what was a difficult time for Girlschool. The quintets enthusiasm for playing live nevertheless shines through, and fans of the band will no doubt welcome the chance to get reacquainted with this show.
