As the world continues to be characterised by conflict and pestilence, things can often feel overwhelming. What we need more than ever is the healing power of music and shot of positivity, and it’s finally arrived in the shape of Alex Melton. Unless you’ve been residing under a rock, you can’t help but have come across his genre-defying covers on the internet, songs that flip well known tunes on their heads and put a fresh spin on familiar themes. However, not wanting to be painted in a corner, Alex breaks with convention and unleashes his debut album, The Process, a collection of original tunes that are at once playful and thoughtful and mark Alex Melton a contemporary force.

Having achieved millions of streams via his cover versions, it would have been easy for Alex to settle into a comfort zone and proceed in a similar vein. Yet that’s not what this artist is about and The Process is the sound of a musician facing down the future in a confident manner. That becomes immediately evident on opening track ‘Falling In Love Again’, a song that, like much of the album, questions the very meaning of existence. While not a concept album per se, there’s a common thread running throughout The Process, that stitches the record together into a cohesive whole. There’s a tight lyrical focus that encapsulates a desire to live in the moment, and that can’t help but seep into the music and gives songs such as ‘Spinning Me Out’ a sense of urgency.

Alex is a multi-instrumentalist and it can be difficult when an artist is so closely aligned with their own work; that distance required to judge songs subjectively can be hard to obtain. To counter this, Alex has teamed up with label mate Alan Day (Four Year Strong) as co-composer and the pair have produced songs that capture the very duality of life; at once life-affirming and introspective, ‘Feel It All’ embraces everything that life has to throw, whilst the following ‘Thunderstorms’ stays at home to watch the rain. They’re themes to which most people can relate and will strike a chord with anyone who has found themselves at a crossroads. Tinged with emo and punk, these songs defy easy categorisation and evidence an artist defiantly resisting genre constraints and in doing so is forging a unique musical identity.

It’s with a sense of optimism and renewal that ‘Monday Morning’ concludes The Process, and for Alex Melton this is undoubtedly a bright beginning.
