For some reason hardcore punk is a notoriously difficult genre to capture on tape. While there are countless classic metal, prog and folk live albums, seminal live punk offerings remain something of a rarity. That’s partly the blitzkrieg approach of punk and the reaction it instils within the crowd; it’s an intangible magic that’s hard to bottle. However, it’s an anomaly that’s about to change thanks to Outer Battery Records who’re going to release two professionally recorded sets by legendary punk band Void on one slab of vinyl. Featuring fourteen ferocious tracks, Live 1982 does exactly what it says on the tin, finding Void at their blistering best and setting the standard for all who followed.
As with many bands who came to fruition during the golden age of American hardcore, Void were busy doing rather than documenting and left very little evidence of their existence. During their original tenure (1979-1984) they left behind a split album with the Faith and three tracks on the seminal Flex Your Head compilation. As the band slowly attained cult status various live tracks and sessions have gradually been released, but a bona fide live album has been long overdue. Those who’ve waited patiently for an official release are rewarded with Live 1982, an album that places the listener in the eye of the storm. Side “A” of the album was captured in April of 1982 (a few months before the release of that split) and found them sharing a bill with Minor Threat, The Faith, Iron Cross, and Double O. If Void were intimidated being in such illustrious company then it didn’t show because they are played with the hammer down, right from opening track ‘Shades Of Grey’. Powered forth by the band’s innovative punk/metal fusion, Void had that certain something which set them apart from their peers, a ground-breaking, genre-defying sound that threatened to implode at any moment, only being held together by a kind of nervous energy. Amongst the prototypical hardcore blast (‘Ignorant People’), you’ll find pummelling cuts such as ‘Spiral Staircase’, the band weeding out the weak and taking the most direct line to what’s all about.
Fast forward eight months and the band found themselves at Washington’s (in)famous 9:30 club for a show with fellow rowdies Negative Approach. Once again caught on tape by Tom Lyle (of Washington band Government Issue), this set comprises the album’s Side “B” and found the band veering further into heavier territory with cuts such as ‘Bloodlust’ sowing the seeds for various strands of extreme metal and the whole crossover movement that would come to fruition later in the decade.
A worthy addition to Void’s discography, Live 1982 is hardcore punk’s first truly great live album. Others will listen with envy.
