It has been quite a journey for London-based metalcore band Confessions Of A Traitor since their formation in 2015. It’s a road that’s taken them around Europe and Russia, whilst making pit stops at renowned festivals such as Rockstad in Romania and ZaxidFest in Ukraine. Along the way they’ve released a steady stream of singles, EPs and albums that have been mere appetizers for their third long player, This Pain Will Serve You. Featuring eleven cuts of brutal, yet melodic, metalcore, album number three is sure to fast track this quartet to the biggest stages.
Attesting to a sense of urgency, Confessions Of A Traitor don’t waste time on fancy introductions or elongated preambles; opening track ‘Starve’ arrives with all fists flying, and it is all the more powerful for it. Like a bullet suddenly appearing between your eyes, it arrives without warning and packs maximum punch. Over the course of 135 seconds, the band throw their weight around and proceed to scrawl their sound on every surface. The vocals are delivered with venom, the guitar writhes like an electrocuted snake and the rhythm section lock in and barrel from speaker to speaker with wrecking ball swing. It all combines into a hefty sound and one that towers over the listener to cast a long, imposing shadow. It serves as a warning to the curious, but those brave enough to step over the threshold will be greeted by an album that’s finely textured and rich in symbolism. That the band are signed to Christian record label Facedown should give you a clue as to where the band are coming from, and the band’s beliefs can’t help but seep into this album; with songs that deal with loss and grief, This Pain Will Serve You has a lyrical bent that’s as weighty as their sound and ensure that even when the band insert lither passages (such as on ‘Love You Leave Behind’) they are tethered with emotion and ensure they impact just as hard as the ferocious and riff heavy (‘Hail Mary’).
Given metal’s preoccupation with the darker side of life, the very idea of a Christian metal(core) band is an anathema to some. However, those who put their preconceived ideas aside will be greeted with an album in This Pain Will Serve You that can swing with anything that’s been released over the past thirty years. It’s another ferocious blast that bookends the album and one in ‘Half Life’ that answers as many questions as it poses and signposts a bright future.
