It’s an early start tonight at The Crossing, with young Scottish alt-rock trio Pistol Daisys taking the stage to a modest but very appreciative crowd. Opening up for veteran road warriors Big Country and The Vapors, they were very much performing in front of a…lets be generous…”mature” audience, and must have been heartened by the warm welcome. Although this was their first time in Birmingham, the band of co-vocalists /guitarists Lorna and Belly along with drummer Lewis were in Wolverhampton just before Christmas as guests of When Rivers Meet and have also toured with Callum Beattie.

They certainly made a strong impression across their groove laden set, with catchy riffs and hooks in abundance and Lewis hitting his kit like his life depended on it. ‘Saint Glasgow’, ‘Crying in Marseille’ and current single ‘Calling Your Name’ evidenced a band that has plenty of decent songs at their disposal and they are certainly worth checking out. Pistol Daisys have also clearly made their mark on the headliners as, an hour or two later, all three of them were back on stage at the behest of Tommie Paxton and Bruce Watson with Lorna and Belly adding harmonies to ‘The Seer’ and ‘Winter Sky’ and with Lewis helping out on percussion. Introduced by Tommie as “three crazy people hanging around the studio”, Pistol Daisys will be touring mainland Europe with Big Country towards the end of the year, an experience that will no doubt stand them in good stead. File under “ones to watch”.
