It’s been full steam ahead for Bavaria-based band Dominum since they formed in 2022. Aside from releasing a handful of singles and EP’s, they’ve also dropped two well received albums and have a third, Night Is Calling primed and ready for action. Their proficiency is partly due to their German work ethic, but with each band member bringing a wealth of experience to this project (including such names as Ad Infinitum, Winterstorm, and Hyrax) they know a thing or two about making records. It’s an expertise that comes into play on Night Is Calling, an album that continues the band’s upward creative curve and should propel them towards the biggest stages.
That Dominum have a musical pedigree is beyond doubt, yet putting several well known “names” together is no sure sign of success. Band chemistry is a strange science; get that mixture wrong and things can often fall flat and fizzle out, mix things in just the right quantities and you’ll have sparks flying and fireworks flashing, and when it comes to Dominum’s third long player, things fall firmly in the second camp. If you want to know how feisty things get then look no further than opening song ‘The Circus Is In Town’; like stepping into a haunted house at an evil carnival, it’s a song that is enticing and frightening at the same time. As with standing at the threshold of a haunted house, every fibre of your being tells you shouldn’t enter, yet you are unable to resist its magnetic pull, ergo Night Is Calling. However, once inside you’ll be welcomed by a melodic brand of gothic-infused-metal that is highly contagious. Just one listen to tracks such as ‘Doctor Doctor’ and they’ll take root, digging themselves deep into your memory bank like a friendly earworm.
That Dominum have a penchant for the dark side should become immediately obvious from the album’s cover and title, yet the band have retained a sense of fun and it’s understandable why their live show has gained a reputation as dens of insanity. Songs such as ‘Nosferatu’ demand crowd participation and will have you singing along, fist pumping and headbanging. A cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is crying out to be released as a single, and it’s sure to do for Dominum what ‘Smooth Criminal’ did for Alien Ant Farm. While it’s true Dominum have retained a sense of fun when it comes to music the band are all business, ‘Jack The ripper’ becomes a cinematic affair and an acoustic version of ‘Don’t Get Bitten By The Wrong Ones’ could swing with the likes of Bon Jovi (and probably win).
An album full of humongous riffs, stadium filling choruses, sing-along sections and rock solid songs, Night Is Calling…and so are Dominum.
