There was a time when the genre of deathcore was viewed as something decidedly uncool, all crabwalk and neck tattoos, with bands who once embraced the term distancing themselves from the label. However, with the passing of time a new generation has embraced those downtuned guitars and Myspace riffs and formulated a heavy sound that’s in perfect sync with our heavy times. Of the current crop of bands leading the charge, Face Yourself are undoubtedly the most brutal (and bombastic) and have funnelled their rage into their latest EP, the aptly-titled Fury.
As befitting their amphetamine-fuelled sound, Face Yourself aren’t here to waste time; this transcontinental crew are based in New York and immediately took the world of deathcore by storm with their eponymously-titled debut EP in 2023. Two more EP’s followed later that year before they took a hiatus in 2024. However, Face Yourself scored a deal with terminally cool label Sumerian Records for whom they released the Martyr EP earlier this year and quickly follow it up with their latest five track effort, Fury. The eagle-eyed might noticed that there is a propensity towards the extended play in their discography, but that’s with good reason. As with Slayer’s Reign In Blood and Discharge’s Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing, Face Yourself have a sound that draws a lot of power from its brevity; it’s the musical equivalent of a brutal street fight; it’s brutal, bloody and over before you know what hit you.
Opening with ‘Wet Dreams’, Face Yourself make a leap straight for your jugular and immediately draw blood with some of the sickest sounds know to man. Operating as a sextet means that Face Yourself have a rich and thick sound; it is an impenetrable wall of sonics with which to entomb the listener. It’s a sound that could become muddied if it wasn’t for the production skills of Joey Sturgis who does a grand job of separating all the instruments whilst ensuring the band attack as a unified force and that turns the likes of ‘Carousel Of Violence’ into certified stompers. With their triple guitar attack, punishing rhythm section and Yasmine Liverneaux’s banshee-like vocals, Face Yourself are not a band for the faint-hearted, but you kind of knew that on the way in.
Featuring five diverse tracks, Fury is far from generic and from the explosive opener to caustic closer ‘Ov Agony’ Face Yourself have created an EP that’s sure to take them from the confines of deathcore and place them on the world’s biggest stages, and that’s got to be a good thing.
