It is a strange anomaly that many “veteran” hard rock bands are currently releasing the best work of their careers. Cloven Hoof, Grave Digger, and the Scorpions have recently let loose records that could rival (if not surpass) anything in their illustrious pasts. A prime example of this phenomena are Münster’s Mad Max, a quintet with roots dating back to 1981 and are celebrating their forty-fifth anniversary with a career-defining album. Featuring eleven thunderous tracks that inhabit the magic space that sits somewhere between hard rock and heavy metal, Stories Of Destiny is an album that finds Mad Max in ruddy health.

For some bands a constant turn over of members can be a death knell, for others it is a rejuvenating exiler, a fountain of youth that springs eternal, and Mad Max very much fall into the latter camp. This time around the fresh blood has arrived in the shape of UK vocalist Alan Clark (also of NWOBHM crew Tokyo Rose/Dark Heart) who has obviously had a big impact on Mad Max, because opening track ‘Silver’ is a bold and brash affair which finds the band flexing their (considerable) muscles. It’s an impressive way to make an appearance and perfectly balances power and nuance; it’s a path the band will walk throughout Stories Of Destiny, meaning that no matter how heavy things get (and they do get heavy on cuts such as ‘Keep You Alive’) there’s always a melodic sensibility underpinning proceedings. That has much to do with Alan Clark who sounds like a more gnarly version of Bon Jovi, yet the band also have an inherent groove and swing from speaker to speaker with wrecking ball force. After years of flux and fluctuation in their line-up it feels as if Mad Max have finally found their ideal combination and while I don’t suggest they mess with their formula, the band’s performance on the likes of ‘Mad Gone Blind’ could scarcely be improved.

Any kind of anniversary is a good moment to pause and take stock of what has come before. Yet, Mad Max aren’t dwelling on the past too much; sure, long time fans will find much to admire in ‘She Was Mine’, the power ballad ‘Wings Of Freedom’ and hard rocking closer ‘Dulces Falsos’, yet Stories Of Destiny has its compass pointed towards the future and suggests Mad Max’s story has many more chapters to be written.
