Just a week or so after the Wonder Stuff packed in the masses at the O2 Academy, Miles Hunt is on stage at the Wulfrun setting up his own equipment with the minimum of fuss and fanfare. Delivering a half hour acoustic set of familiar Wonder Stuff tunes, he served as the perfect warm-up act for what was to follow. ‘Caught in my Shadow’ was interspersed with anecdotes of borrowing his brothers copy of ‘Anarchy in the UK’, touring with PiL in years gone by and being invited for a night out with John Lydon that resulted in much hellraising. ‘Unbearable’ and ‘The Size of a Cow’, ( a song that apparently divides the Stuffies fan base), had everyone singing along and Miles proved to be a great raconteur even given his relatively brief time on stage. Still going strong in 2025, and having played more than 40 gigs this year, Public Image Ltd are in commanding form. John Lydon’s defiant determination to persevere with PiL demonstrates his love of being on stage, his piercing stare holding the audience captive throughout their 90 minute set. The set list read like pretty much the best of PiL, drawing heavily on the pair of genre-defining albums from the late 70’s, kicking off with the tumultuous ‘Home’ that soon whipped the front rows into a frenzy. ‘Home’ witnessed Lydon as his most venomous, delivering the lyrics against the backdrop of prominent bass heavy rhythms and edgy guitars that forms the blueprint for what PiL are all about. Although many members have passed through the ranks over the years, with Lydon flanked by the hugely impressive Lu Edmonds on guitars and bassist Scott Firth along with newcomer Mark Roberts on drums, this feels like an exceptionally strong and powerful live unit.

The sonic assault of ‘This Is Not a Love Song’, followed by a slight drop off in tempo for the no less menacing ‘Poptones’ and dark dance anthem ‘Death Disco’, formed a mid-set trio summing up all that was great about this gig. ‘Flowers of Romance’, surely the most unlikely and unconventional single to have ever breached the Top 5, thrilled with Roberts’ tribal drumming and Lydon’s chilling vocals. ‘Shoom’, a song that must be a record breaker for cramming the most swear words into one lyric, closed out the main set and led into a magnificent, OTT first encore of ‘Public Image’, ‘Open Up’ and ‘Rise’, arguably the best pop song by a band that are as far removed from pop as it is possible to be. By the end of the evening you are left in no doubt that you have just seen something iconic, and totally one of its kind.

John Lydon clearly still has much to say and this was a terrific gig in which to close out the year. He will be back at the Wulfrun Hall in October as part of his one man speaking tour, and judging by the reviews to previous shows that will be one not to be missed.
