Born in 2015, Münster’s Shoreline have achieved a lot in the past decade. Formed with the intention of becoming an integral part of the local do-it-yourself scene, it’s a remit the band have filled effortlessly. In fact, it didn’t take them long to create waves globally, resulting in shows with legendary acts such as Silverstein and Four Year Strong. However, Shoreline were never going to be a band standing in anyone’s shadow and their fourth long player (and second for Pure Noise Records) finds them in the spotlight’s glare and serving up ten tracks in the shape of Is This The Low Point Or The Moment After? that will propel the band towards the biggest stages.

While Shoreline are certainly no copyists, their fusion of emo and punk reminds me a little of Polar Bear Club. And just like that New York crew, Shoreline prove themselves master alchemists, welding the best of each genre into an explosive mixture. Of course, playing any form of crossover is a risky business; fumble the ball and a band can find themselves in a kind of musical no-man’s-land and with no appreciative audience to play to. No such worries here because opening couplet ‘Worry Count’ and ‘Brittle Bond’ make the perfect one-two punch. The former is an insidious number that slowly ingratiates itself into your psyche before the latter lands a hefty blow with a song that’s at once heavy and lithe. The emotive nature of emo makes the perfect foil for the hefty punch of punk, the band connect the two like live electrical wires and send sparks flying in every direction. The push and pull between the respective genes makes for an interesting tension of opposites; the resignation of emo and the defiance of punk makes for an intriguing dichotomy, and it’s never knowing in what guise the band will appear next which makes this album such an addictive listen. At times they’ll lean heavily in one direction, at others the opposite, and the shifting sands, the constant recalibration of the scales, means that tracks such as ‘Forgive’ (featuring a guest spot from Knuckle Puck’s Joe Taylor) never fail to hold the listener’s attention.

It sounds as if the eleven years since the band’s inception have been well spent, and when compared to the band’s earlier efforts, Is This The Low Point Or The Moment After? shows a clear line of development and finds Shoreline continuing upwards on their creative arc. There’s not a single second wasted here, meaning that the entire record clocks in at under thirty-minutes. Yet it’s far from sparse and one listen won’t be enough to take in all its various facets, but when the songs are as good as the jaunty ‘Out Of Touch’ or the staccato ‘Good Times’, repeat plays are never a chore.
