After a successful tour comprising Derek Trucks & Susan Tedaschi’s Soul Stew Revival, a decision was made by Derek and Susan to pool their considerable talents and the Tedeschi Trucks Band was born in 2010. With a sound that encompasses blues, gospel, soul and rock, you could say that musical fusion is embedded deep within their DNA, and they bring all these elements together on their sixth studio album, Future Soul. A skillet that’s full of goodness, this is an album which finds the band forging forwards, whilst holding onto their roots, the past and present colliding to signpost the future of soul.
Playing any type of crossover is a risky business; fumble the ball and a band can find themselves in a kind of musical no-man’s-land with no appreciative audience to play to. The multifaceted sound in which Tedeschi Trucks Band deal makes that science an even harder art, yet opening track ‘Crazy Cryin’’ proves the band master alchemists. It’s a smorgasbord of different styles and genres, all stitched into a patchwork quilt that wraps the listener up within its golden hues. The first thing that hits you when spinning this disc is its production; like a Marshall amplifier with hot valves, there’s a nice warm glow emanating from these grooves. Derek’s guitar sounds as if his strings have been soaked in honey, whilst Susan’s vocals are like a fine malt whisky that’s been aged in an oak barrel. It all conspires to create an intimate feel that bridges the gap which usually separates band from listener. It also brings the instruments to the fore and places an emphasis on the beat, and that’s vitally important because ‘Crazy Cryin’’ swings like Head Hunters-era Herbie Hancock. It’s totally infectious and sets the tone for the rest of the record; this isn’t the type of music you passively receive, rather it demands a reaction and will have all but the frail and infirm strutting their stuff. In a similar vein, the following ‘I Got You’ is a jaunty number that’s awarded instant earworm status, but be warned; if you encountered this song on breakfast radio then it’d follow you around all day like a friendly spectre.
The band’s vast and various influences means that no two songs inhabit the same sonic space and as such Future Soul flows like an old school album. While it’s perfectly feasible to dip in and out of this record and enjoy each track individually, it’s best to set aside 45-minutes to fully appreciate its push and pull. It’s never knowing what Tedeschi Trucks Band will throw into the mix that makes it such an engaging listen, meaning the all out title-track sits next to the laid back ‘Under The Knife’ quite effortlessly, whilst the country-infused ‘Who Am I’ foreshadows the sun kissed rocker ‘Be Kind’, all swirled in the band’s cauldron and brought to life with the panache of a white witch.
Firmly rooted in various strands of Americana, yet also forward facing, this is the sound of Future Soul.
